Thinking about a trip to the finger lake region of New York,  never been but hear it's a gorgeous area.

Planning to stay in Auburn for several days, can you recommend a section of town? hotel?  any good restaurants??

I've been through the fingerlakes as they are about  a 45 min ride away from me. My buddy is heading out there for a Hill climb competition here are a couple links to sites we were looking at.

I just came back from a 4 day trek around the finger lakes and didn't find a boring road. Found Watkins Glen was nice, as was Ithica and Corning. We stayed @ Lakeside Resort on 14 (WATKINS GLEN) ..Good rates (79.00) nice Owner 5 min out of town.If you want a little nicer (120.00) and a pool plus balcony views and closer to town  just south of the lakeside is the place for you. They also have a good Italian Resturant there. Also a good see is the Glenn Curtis museum at the base of Keuga Lake in Hammondsport.
Hope this helps

I live not far from Auburn ... Syracuse area. Lots of history in Auburn but not necessarily a photogenic area. Unless of course the state prison in the middle of the city is of interest  ;)

I would recommend to stay in one of the beautiful lake side areas if possible. You will be in the middle o f New York State wine country. See http://www.fingerlakeswinecountry.com/

Also http://www.mirbeau.com/ in Skaneateles N.Y. is highly regarded and is only 7 miles away.

Many choices in the area but right inside Auburn wouldn't be one of mine.

I'd recommend Skaneatles far higher than Auburn also.  Don't forget Watkins Glen, a walk down the gorge is a great thing to do (take the bus to the top, trust me on this).  Ithaca is a great town also.  There are a lot of wineries in the area of the Finger Lakes.  Constantine Frank in Hammondsport is a VERY good one.  Wagner Vineyards on the east side of Seneca Lake has a bewery too and an incredible deck overlooking the lake.

Update: Getting across PA from South to North, Northern NY trip
« Reply #9 on: August 11, 2010, 09:13:51 PM »

Heading to Ithaca NY from VA on Saturday and looking at the map I'm contemplating route 11 out of Harrisburg to route 15 in order to get across PA. We dont really have a lot of time to waste but would like some opinions on this route in terms of making decent time and somewhat scenic???

You absolutely can't beat it!  Its a new (3 year old) limited access highway all the way to Corning that follows the susquehanah river. I've traveled it twice and loved the scenery. I averaged 75 mph coming home from York a couple years ago and felt like I was the only one on the road. The word might be out on it now. My GPS was telling me I was "off road" the whole time.

Aclass,
You might want to consider crossing the valley and take 340 through Front Royal and Harper's Ferry then hit 15 in Maryland. Route 11 in the valley goes through a lot of small towns and is kind of slow going (it is very scenic though) through Winchester and up into W.V., 340 turns to 4-lane a little north of Front Royal and is still rural and scenic without going through the center of a lot of towns. 15 is a great road as mentioned above. Just my thoughts as I have recently been on all these roads.
Have a great time!

Just re-read your OP and realized you said Harrisburg not Harrisonburg! Sorry, forget all those directions and just do 11 to 15 like you planned.

You werent kidding Jester!   great ride along the Sesquehanna and most definitely worth the few towns you have to go through,  we had the wind to our back and it felt like riding in a vacuum.  Running the from rain showers today in Ithaca but tomorrow and the rest of the week looks good.  Thanks again for the suggestion.
