I too have a riders claw (you can barely see it on the right side handlebar on the pic I provided) which is where it sits while riding.  When connected to the Alpine receiver the Ipod Nano screen goes gray with the Alpine logo present.  All the album/song info and artwork is displayed right in front of me on the receivers digital graphis screen....title of the song scrolls as that song plays. I've attached another pic to show you what the display looks like when powered up.

Since you use the Iphone for Nav, you already have the riders claw mounted to the bars. So handlebar controls would not be a great loss for you. However....for those of us that don't want another thing hanging off the bars, handlebar controls are a big plus. Also the IPOD or IPHONE won't get wet.

I would do this if I was using an Iphone, DROID or other such device in a riders claw......

I'm already thinking!!!!!

And as for the waterproof idea...doesn't the riders claw fit so snug that putting the waterproofing device on may make the phone or IPOD to big to fit in the claw??

I'll pass on the condom trick.  I don't know what the big deal is? The rain has to be coming down pretty darn hard for quite a while before the ipod will even get wet behind the fairing. When you see the first drops, just unplug and stick it somewhere. No biggie.
