After visiting the Chapel in the Hills, we headed back up to Hill City on Sheridan Lake Road. This is a road I have never been on and one of the reasons I love letting Gary lead the group (see photo). He knows the roads a lot of folks never get to and should. We ended up having a problem at the end of the road however as there was some loose gravel near the intersection with 385, just 6 miles from the hotel.
Paul and I were in front of Adam and our rear wheel slipped on the gravel, I thought we were going down but Paul kept us vertical. I turned around to warn Adam and it was too late. His bike (Paul's vintage Honda 750) slipped out from under him before he could even react and both he and the bike went skidding to the center line. Adam was not seriously hurt, just some bruises, torn clothing and a tube of Chapstick that saved some skin. The bike took it on the engine guard, mirror, front brake fluid reservoir, seat and rear turn signal.
In hindsight, we all realized how blessed we were that we were at very low speed and that there was no oncoming traffic. It just takes a second for things to go wrong.
We brushed the gravel off the curve so that no one else would have a similar experience and headed back to the hotel. A sobering ending to a great day of riding.
Well it's all right, riding around in the breeze
Well it's all right, if you live the life you please
Well it's all right, doing the best you can
Well it's all right, as long as you lend a hand.
