2009 Battery Issues
« on: May 30, 2010, 05:15:21 PM »

It seems that whenever I take my 09 FLHTCUSE4 out for a ride, the battery gets pretty discharged by the time I get home. I added the LED light bar to the luggage rack and also a run, turn, brake module. Is that enough to discharge the battery? Or is this an issue with the alarm system being armed whenever you walk away from the bike with the key?

I can't help with what is draining your battery, but I have the same bike and have not had an issue with battery.
Just to make sure I am getting this correct it is discharging when you ride?
Are you still under warranty?

Most likely none of the above.  What makes you think the battery is discharged, the gauge reading or slow cranking or ?    The LED's draw very little current, so that's not an issue.  Same with the run/turn/brake setup, that's a very common mod that won't overtax the electrical system either.  And the alarm system doesn't draw much current, certainly not enough to run a battery down in a bike that is being ridden.

I had the same problem on my 08 SERK, battery had a bad cell. Replaced under warranty no issue.

thanks for the responses. I think the battery is discharging because after I got back from a 2 hour ride and then tried to restart the engine to move the bike, it was very slow cranking over and took a bit to start. This happened about 20 minutes after I got home.

First thing to check is the battery cables, make sure they are clean and tight at the battery posts and at the starter.  Any slow cranking issue due to high resistance will be worse at high temps like shortly after a long ride.  If that's not the problem, it would be a good idea to have the dealer do a battery load test and a charging system output test.  It's also an excellent idea with a 110 to make absolutely certain the automatic compression releases are actually working.  If they aren't, hot starts will be a problem.

Your first post made it seem like this was something that happens after every ride.  If that's the case, how does it crank after it sits overnight or for a day or two?

hi Jerry, it cranks fine after sitting over night on the charger. have not tried w/o charging. Guess I should try w/o charging overnight after a ride and see what happens. Thanks

GG,

My bike just started acting up like yours, did you resolve your issue?

Took my bike in to dealer, they found that the stator was bad. Replaced it, at no charge (still under warranty) and the battery is holding charge. All is good  :pineapple: :bananarock:

My 2010 FLHTCU had similar problems with less than 3000km. Ended up being a bad voltage regulator. Replaced under warranty.  All is well now ;D
