Had a backfire....
« on: August 31, 2010, 08:49:22 PM »

...yesterday for the first time. Bike had been sitting for about 30 min after riding for a couple hours in the hot weather. Went to start it, backfire and smoke thru the A/C, then started up normally. Runs great, no other issues. Bad batch of gas maybe? Or maybe something to do with the Roland Sands A/C I recently installed- it has the end of the vent tubes drooling the oil back into the throttle body opening, which I figure can't be a good thing?

I'd start with your compensator... That's the likely root cause.  If that's it, it will eventually take out your starter clutch.

It wouldn't hurt to verify your Auto compression releases are still working, but they probably are.

I have had that happen a couple of times.

I am not sure what causes that but I suspect that the cylinder ignites before top dead center and the engine reverses and the exhausts comes out the a/c
(a big blue cloud)
It makes a horrible noise when this happens and does not start on that cycle.
It always starts in the next try.
pre ignition on while the starter is engaged makes terrible noise.

I do not think this has anything to do with compression release, but I could be wrong.

Not sure what the fix is yet............

I encountered the same problem. It only happened once and a while. I had the dealer check it out and they said there was nothing wrong. Eventually it got so bad that it occurred about every second start. Took it back to the dealer and the problem was the rear ACR was bad. They had to replace the rear ACR, compensator and starter.

If it only happened one time and never again, I wouldn't worry about it.  On the other hand, if it repeats then I would suspect ACR's.  Back when the ACR's were failing on a regular basis, or they were getting turned off accidently when doing SERT's, the symptoms were very similar to what you described.  And just because the current ACR's seem to be better doesn't mean you can't have an intermittent failure.

The ACR'S reduce compression on the up stroke so what causes the the exhuast to come out the A/C?

Is this the scenario?
ACR does not open up starter stalls, engine fires before TDC and engine reverses opening up intakes valves and out blows exhaust.....blue smoke?

Yup, exactly like Keats describes...I think I'll keep an eye on it, and if it happens more frequently, I'll see what the stealer has to say- I still have warranty for another year.

Thanks to all.

should definitely not happen at all.

But be prepared to get told: "Oh that's normal, happens sometimes ..."  ;)
