Quick Review: J&M In-fairing CB Antenna
« on: January 02, 2010, 09:51:40 AM »

I wanted a "clean" CB installation on my bike which meant that I didn't want to change tank consoles for the rider headset connection, didn't want a tour pak on the bike for the passenger headset connection and PTT/Vol. controls, and didn't want a tour pak-mounted or rear-mounted CB antenna.

The HD Boom Audio Music Intercom Kit, p/n 77108-09, solved all of the major issues, except for the CB antenna.  The J&M in-fairing antenna arrived about the same time that I did the BAMI kit install, but I hadn't had the opportunity to test it in a large group ride until yesterday.  The antenna installed is shown on J&M's website:

http://www.jmcorp.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=FPA-HJCB&PF=43

The CB with the J&M in-fairing antenna worked great.  I don't know the max range of this combination (and surely it will be less than a tour pak/rear mounted whip), but it worked great communicating with the sweep for clearing intersections, changing/securing lanes on interstate-type roadway, and other communcations where the range was typically  1/4-1/2 mile and, perhaps, one mile at times.

For my purpose, i.e. group riding, this antenna works very well.

If you have an Ultra and you want to make the tour pak detachable without losing the CB function or adding an alternative CB antenna rear-mounting location to retain the CB function , the J&M in-faring antenna is worth a look.  Or, if you don't have a tour pak on the bike regularly and would like to have CB without the hassle of connecting a CB antenna at the rear of the bike, this antenna may work well for your appliation--it does for mine.

I assume you plugged this antenna into the Harley CB add-on module?

Reason I ask, is I am looking at hand held CB options with quick detach capabilities (off the handlebars) to use only when I'm doing Road Captain duties.

Thanks.

He wouldn't have gotten 1/4 to 1/2 mile distances and sometimes 1 mile if he hadn't plugged it in...maybe 50 feet. Beside that, I am very pleased to hear the review. I purchased the same J&M antenna and installed it on my new 2011 cvo SG. I installed the HD CB module & non ultra harley overlay harness & intercom harness kit. I'm waiting for my Yaffe MBBs before I complete the install with the PTT & squelch buttons. I also purchased the J&M FM/AM/WB inside fairing antenna and that seems to do an acceptable job replacing the rear antenna. I read on the J&M website that the CB fairing mount antenna provides about 80% distance capability as a rear whip antenna, so I'm glad to hear it works as advertised.
