96 cam suggestions
« on: January 09, 2011, 07:03:24 AM »

Alright guys and gals here's the deal. I have a 20089 rocket project going on and soon I want cams
I just don't have a clue what to go with. I don't want to do anything other than drop in cams. I have Vance and Hines short shot staggers,  d&m spike a/c, and tts tuner. My priorities are in this order, reliability,  sound ( I would like a loping idle), then low to mid torque. I only ride the bike one up and don't want anything to radical. I was looking at headquarters 525's. But I am clueless when it comes to this.thanks in advance.

If your main objective is "loping idle" and you don't really care about "driveabliity" then get a more radical cam.
On the other hand, if you actually looking for the "ride" go with the 54 (or 555 or 48 or 255 or something similar)
Lot depends on your riding style and what you are looking for (loping idle)
JMHO

Example: I have one bike that has that "loping idle". It's a hot rod, bad gas mileage, doesn't pull very hard at low RPM's, etc, etc...........BUT, grab some throttle and you better hang on! :2vrolijk_21:

If all you're doing is leaving it 96", with NO headwork, get a set of SE255 cams, and call it a day. You can find them used as well.
FWIW,Some of the mods you have now are killing the power.  :o

I have a set of 255's with only 1500 miles on them. Let me know.

Thanks for the input guys! I've really been researching hard the last couple of days. I think I'm really close to pulling the trigger on the 48h or the 37h.From what I can tell these are very good cams for a stock 96". The 37 does give me the option to do a little more work later on if I choose.  and yes I know the short shots kill the torque but sometimes i have to sacrifice a little performance for looks. What do you guys think?  I did see a dyno from gmr performance that I believe was a stock 96" with stage 1 putting out 90hp and 106 foot pounds. Very very interesting

A Wood 5-6 is a great option as well.
That 37 needs 9.8-10.0 to run effectively.
Doc's Performance Tuning, near Orlando, just showed 106/111 with a 98"/37 cam/Fatcat/our Stage II heads, set at 9.9. Torque almost flatlines. FWIW. :)

SE 204. reliable, sounds great and has the lope of a big cam without losing everything down low.
takes a little extra care when tuning,so it depends on your tuner, the 37's will work decent ,actually make decent power,at your stock compression. but they could use a little more as scott says. but the 37 is pretty forgiving.
here is one I did in a stock 96 ci dyna,no head work just a bolt in 37 with V&H 2-2 big radius. keep in mind these pipes work a lot better than the ones you have now.
clutch shows some slipping in the graph, but it is a womans bike and thats all she can pull.(stock setup)
