I've seen a similar problem on cars and trucks. The cap is not put on tight enough. On a car or truck it causes a check engine light because the tank is pressurized. I was told by my Chevy dealer to turn the cap until it clicks a bunch of times. I've never had a problem since. I also haven't experienced this on my Harley. I always fill up on the jiffy stand and I don't overfill it. I then tighten the cap until it clicks 5 or more times. I don't think you can over tighten them or hurt anything by turning it with several clicks. Let us know what the dealer says and does.

Just left the dealer, and they also noticed a problem with the cap & replaced it with another that seems to be fitting snugger.  At least at this point, I don't smell gas around the cap.

I've had mine for 5,000 miles and it's happened twice now. Both times after filling. Both times I turned the cap till it clicked. This last time, I noticed something. I always fill from a seated position. When I got off the bike I put the heal of my hand on top of cap and it turned a bit more before clicking!!! I think the caps may be faulty.

I found this exact same thing !! Min e was leaking every time I filled up when I first got my bike!
I replaced the cap and it hasnt leaked since!

Not sure if anyone has been counting replacement caps but our 10 had to be replaced after 2500 miles.

Just based on the number of "leakers" I've seen mentioned online, I think there should have been a recall on this.  Did any of those actually affected bother to notify NHTSA?

I don't think it's limited to just the convertibles.  I have a 2010 Fat Bob and the same thing happened to me.  I've been doing the downward pressure thing, but now I'm going to take it back.  I wonder how many others are thinking they weren't screwing it on tight enough and are living with the problem?

My dealer warranty lady told me it was a very common item on all screwtops for the 09 and 10. Had a box of new caps in her office.

Never had a leak (not yet)  but my 2008 springer has the flush mounted cap and it doesn't click.

I had the problem with my '09 Fat Bob.  After filling the tank, I'd get some fuel out on the tank when pulling out of the station.  The gas cap has a rubber gasket that actually creates the seal against the tank.  The parts counter at my dealership did a warranty replacement on that gasket and I haven't had the problem with fuel leaking since.

Mine leaked once because I overfilled it. I now have the flush mounts and it does not leak or click.
