Tips for June 2011 trip to Deals Gap
« on: December 28, 2010, 10:55:43 PM »

Hi guys. Me and several friends are planning a trip from Sioux Falls South Dakota to Deals Gap this coming spring. I was interested to know if anyone had any tips or "must see" stuff to help plan. We plan on spending about three days in the area and like to tent camp. We do enjoy fine but cheap dining, (Mom and pop stuff = great food, no chain garbage!), and small quiet camp grounds with showers and maybe friendly group rates. It sucks to pay 20 bucks a head to put up little tents for 8-9 guys spread out all over the campground.. Anyway, if anyone has any input it will be greatly appreciated!

My opinion...PM Brian...103 thunder, and he can give you some awesome advice on which raods to ride, besides the Dragon. I would tell you them, but we were riding SOOOOOO fast, i couldn't see the street signs.

BTW, He's also one helluva tour guide and singer...LOL.

1.  Ride US 129 the dragon on the week days, much less sport bikes, much less traffic.

Also ride the Charaholha (SP) sky way.

68 along the Ocoee rive is real nice too.

Lots of good rides and roads in the area.

We rented a Chalet in Pigeon Forge and spent a week there with all of us being from the Ann Arbor Michigan area.  You must go to Mad Maps and order an area map.  From there you will see highlighted routes with approximate mileage.  The only thing that disappointed me is that you almost always have to go through Smokey Mountain national park to get anywhere and that can be a slow go.  There are alot of poplular routes that are very obvious.  The only one that blew my mind was the ride to SNAKE, and the SNAKE itself.  We also saw a lot of rain when we went.  Our dates were June 9th-17th.

If you go to this tread 2010 CVO Smoky Mountain Gathering – Sep. 29 thru Oct. 2 – Maggie Valley, NC! and go to page 57 you will find some great ride information and Garman downloads  that Brian and the other organizers of MV10 put together  :2vrolijk_21:

Great family style food at The Dillard House, in Dillard Georgia.

http://www.dillardhouse.com/restaurant/

Take Rt 28 from Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort to Rt 74 East, then right to continue on Rt 28 to Franklin, NC. - then follows Rt 441/23 to Dillard Georgia.

A GREAT motorcycle route/ride ending at a GREAT place to eat.

I recommend the 'Ironhorse' also, stayed there twice rented cabins, fairly central location, excellent food, owners are real friendly.

Try to ride the Dragon on a week day is great advice! North Carolina and Tennessee Highway patrol still watching us! There are some pics under Pictures Topic from the day after Christmas with about 4 or 5 inch's of SNOW on the Dragon...wild. Cherahola Skyway is one you don't want to miss! Take some snacks or a picnic type lunch and enjoy the mountain. It does have a couple of tricky curves so stay alert. Pic from Skyway this past June.
