Exhaust End Caps Stripped Screw--I Need Some Ideas
« on: December 20, 2010, 03:01:04 PM »

So here I am trying to do some preventive maintenance to prevent this very issue and it happens on the last screw!

As many of us are painfully aware, if you don't put anti seize compound on the end cap screws after awhile you will strip the screw head and then the real fun begins.......

So now that the head inside is no longer a hex shape what do I try next before taking the whole muffler off and drilling it out or grinding the head off?

Regards

Jerry ive done a bunch of them over the years, First spray the offending clip from the inside with a good penetrant, then  take the next size torx bit and tap it into place then lean on your drill and reverse it out.

Use a drill smaller than the body diameter of the screw and drill the head off then use vice grip to remove after spraying with WD 40

I had a similar problem with a cam plate bolt... To my luck my neighbor had a set of these, so I tried before I buy... Worked great, every toolbox should have a set in the box.... Got my set at Ace but I think you can find these anywhere

You can also use a left hand drill and it will sometimes back right out.

Maybe you can grind a slot in it to remove with a flat blade screwdriver. Don't ask how I know this trick.

UPDATE:  Huge thanks to everyone who offered their ideas and suggestions. The winner for my problem was cvobiker.

If you haven't seen or tried these easy outs you need to. They really do work well. Of course it does help if your
battery powered drill doesn't take a sh.t just when you need it most.

Once I removed the muffler to get better access, the job took literally 3 minutes.

The best $16.00 I have spent.

Oh yea, I did go the extra mile and replace all 6 screws with stainless steel ones with a small amount of anti seize dabbed on the threads.

Thanks again for a terrific solution.

Happy Holidays

Jerry
