Any Tire Choices for the FLTRSE3 ???
« on: June 14, 2013, 01:07:27 AM »

Are there any tire choices, other than Dunlop for the FLTRSE3 ???

'Had the front replaced by the recall at 3.5k mi.

'Had the rear replaced by ESP for "scalloping" at 5.5k mi.

Anybody else had tire issues with the FLTRSE3 ???

Yes, we have all had issues I think. My rear is cupped, but at least I got about 15k out of it- plenty of tread though.

My previous front had the sidewall cracking, but it's replacement is doing fine, knock on wood.

The only other tires that come in our sizes are the Avon (Cobras or Venoms?), but they are radials, and have a lower load rating, so for me they aren't an option.

North Star is correct.  There are no bias ply options.  The Dunlop D407 (Retail, $296)  and D408F ($212) are the only available bias tires available and are only sold though HD.  I got 17,000 miles out of my last set and barely got 8,000 out of the Metzlers I used on my 2004 RG so I don't complain.

This might help:  $40. HARLEY-DAVIDSON CONSUMER MAIL-IN Rebate - Dunlop Tires through June 15.  I ordered a set from Tri-County HD.  20% off, $10/tire shipping, no tax and a $40 gift card through the mail in rebate.

N S, G K,

I guess that's what we get for owning a HD with bastard tire sizes.

The replacements now on the bike seem to be wearing even and not scalloping so far, (about 5kmi F, about 3kmi R although I first noticed the R scalloping @ 5kmi). When did you notice your R start scalloping?

GK thanks for the promo info, but I have new tires on the '09 now.

'Am very anal about the tires on all my vehicles, 'always keep an eye on pressure, wear patterns, balance weights, alignment etc...

edit; 11/19/13 Having the GlidePro bushings installed while the motor is out (no labor) will let y'all know if they make any difference.

'Always stayed w/ the OE Dunlops on the '05 SEEG, even when others were touting the Metzlers, as I have ridden the bike in all conditions (monsoons, Dragon's Tail, out West etc... and know how they are going to act. I get 10-11.5kmi out of the R
Thanks for the input

Have any of you guys tried running a 200/50-18 on your bikes?  Dunlop E3 comes in this size.  I own a shop and can still only get the exact tire size in a bias tire from HD.  I currently have a Pirrelli Night Dragon on the rear with the stock bias on the front but am not happy with the mileage, the handling is fine.  I talked with several tire manufacturers before doing this and was told that if I were to mix bias/radials always put the radial on the rear which I did with no problems other than the mileage issue.  The Dunlop E3s seem to be getting extraordinary mileage.  We have put a bunch of them on in the 16" size with all satisfied customers.  I have a guy running them on his stock RK with 20k on them.  Just curious if any of you have tried the 200 on a stock wheel.

The E3 200/50R18 76H has a lower load rating than the stock 180/55B18  80H, and it requires a wider rim.  So it isn't a viable substitution.

Even if you scoff at that load rating difference (you shouldn't), the rim size requirements make this a no go.  The stock rim on the bike is 18 X 5.00".  The recommended rim width for the E3 200/50 R18 is 6.25".  That, if you ask any qualified tire engineer, is a major difference and definitely not recommended.

You may love it and you are certainly entitled to. See the comments above regarding the load rating and recommended rim size, however.

The way that I've been running the '09, load rating on the tires is something that I pay attention to these days.

not so far, got 16000 miles out of the stock Dunlop on the front and will replace the rear stock Dunlop this winter with 22000 miles, did have cupping issues about 6000 miles ago so the dealer re-balanced it and I got another year out of it.

On another note, would like to switch to a 19 or 21 on the front.
