2009 RG high speed wobble, motor mounts? head bearing?
« on: November 13, 2010, 10:45:39 PM »

HI, I have a 2009 RG, anything above 70MPH it has a wobble. I feel it in the front end, but that doesn't mean it is coming from there. I have adjusted the head bearing both tighter and looser in small incriments, no difference. I remember reading about somebody having the motor mounts on a new Glide replaced? How do you check them? I have a service manual, but can't seem to find anything on it. Suggestions? this sucks!!

I am assuming you have changed out the front Dunlop 407 tire to 408. You probably have already checked tire pressure.

I actually have 2 sets of tires and wheels, new aftermarket 21 & 18, and stock. The aftermarket are worse than stock, but stock still wobbles.

greetings,

Some where on here there are discussions on a service bulletin from H-D.  Seems as if the touring bikes had loose front ends and they came out with new specks and guidelines on tightening the neck bearings.  The number was M-1246.  Try this http://www.box.net/shared/tbyk3jqgho.

What rear tire are you running?  I have seen a where the metzeler 200 on an 18 rim willl cause a wobble because of a weak sidewall.

Harley has done a nice job of changing the motor mounts in the front to help eliminate the bagger wobble but they still use the same cleave block bushing as all previous years.  I would check the torque on the the cleave blocks should be about 40 to 45 lbs on most models  Mine caused me to crash at 70 mph in arizona a few years ago and harley certainly should me how little they cared about my almost dying. Put a good stabilizer on the the rear fork,  don't drust MOCO.  They have an Attorny on retainer just to stomp on anyone who files a claim.
Eric buel to this day still beliobe a heim joint in the back is the cure like they did on Sporties.

Check your alignment, fixed a lot of newer bikes that come with a bad alignment from the factory.  Usually ends up causing more of a pull then wobble, but worth a look.

I was wondering about that.... so what do you do if your bike isn't perfectly aligned? I did the string trick and I think my bike is off a little bit, but couldn't figure out how to adjust it. Guess you could modify the rear wheel adjusters, after all do we really thing that is a "precision" adjustment from the factory?

Head Bearing adjustment  also look at Tech Article M-1246  and finally the front tire.

The last time I had my 09 in they removed all links to the motor and allowed it to settle while running and then refastened mounts to the motor.

Head Bearing would be my first place, Just fixed my new '11 with less than 500 mi on it. Bad decel wobble @ 40 MPH, realize you are talking about a different speed and condition but the bottom line is the swing test is about as reliable to adjust head bearings as getting good information from Washington. When I did the swing test on mine I got almost one swing different depending which direction I went. That coupled up with cables and other things going through there , no way you can get an accurate reading. . The RG has nothing up there IE; extra weight radio, like a  batwing faring bike. . I fixed mine by setting it at just barely 1 swing.  IF you look at the TSB they will tell you that the bearing adjustment is tighter on an RG ...Bottom line is the head bearings need a little friction to make the bike track correctly. Remember the old Jap bikes..they all had a steering dampners to adjust for that kind of thing.  What I did my not be perfect in HD's eyes but neither is an NEW bike that shakes...and is  unsafe to ride . HD will tell you if you complain.. Never take you hands off the bars.. BS....A little Texas engineering fixed that chit.....Greg

When adjusting/checking the steering head bearings, the fall away check is too subjective IMO.
Pull enough of the fairing off to enable a spanner wrench to be used directly on the adjustment nut.
Get the front end off the ground, ensure bearings properly lubed, then load-unload-reload the bearings and steering friction by direct feel.

Spot on Herko, Swing test is way to subjective, Thought about using a spanner wrench, didn't want to pull all the chit off to get to it, What brand of spanner wrench do you use? Thanks Greg

A good pair of properly sized Channel Locks.
