Hi Linc, 2 years ago i contacted garmin about the difference between the zumo 550 and zumo 660 and was told the 550 was spec. out by h-d for vibration, water, and direct sunlight. The rep said the 660 wasnt a bad unit just not as rugged. He told me to pick up both units and feel the weight diff. The difference in features was something about the 660 showing maps differently in some major citys and showing you exactly what lane you are in or something like that. (its been a while) I do know a few guys that bought the 660 and they are very happy with them. If you get a chance call Garmin and discuss  it further with them.

I just bought a new SESG and decided to upgrade to the 660 (I had the 450). I really like the widescreen and the "lane-assist" works well in large metro areas. Other than that its really a wash for me. The biggest question for me was the mount. I really did not want to drill holes in my fairing so I tried the handlebar mount first. I really didn't like it. Everything on my SG was so "built-in" ; adding the GPS on my handlebars just seemed out of place. And it seemed a pain in the rear to take it off (I don't normally ride with the GPS so I removed the mount previously). I bit the bullet and bought the fairing mount. Getting past the horror of taking a drill bit to my new fairing, it was really easy to do. The wiring was simple and when the GPS is off the bike, there is a nice cover for the GPS mount so I really don't notice it. The only downside of the fairing mount is there is no adjustment to the angle of the screen; sometimes the sun would make it hard to read. The fairing mount was a lot cheaper too; $39 vs $149 for the chrome handlebar mount (I know its funny to let $100 be an issue after dropping $33K on a bike)....My 2 cents

I don't like the distraction of a bar mount. I stayed with the Radio GPS and listen through it. Don't wanna die looking for a turn. But, thats just me!

You can replicate the 2011 SERGU chrome mount/internall wiring with HD mounting bracket, p/n 76000022, (the $149 mentioned above) if you like.

SBB installed the mount on his '09 SEUC in this thread:

There are also pictures of the Techmount ($80) chrome handlebar mouint as well in that thread.

Good luck with your research.

Carl

PS:  I'm waiting on delivery of my mount (same one SBB used); they were on backorder until recently.

In regards to the glare on the fairing mount...can that be defeated with a visor of sorts? Do they make one for the Garmin?

go with the 660 and the HD handlebar mounting suggested above. Only a flexible handlebar mounting will be first class readible and easily reached all the time.

Just changed from 550 to 660 and I'm extremely pleased. Have been watching the discussion on various nav boards for 2 years while Garmin fiddled with the 660's firmware, now it's decently working as it should. The 660 is 1. faster, 2. got better display, 3. has stereo , 4. fully supports modern smartphones. Yes, it's less rugged - but I don't intend to play soccer with electronic devices anyway  ;)

Thanks Kraut...what do you know about the 665? I know that in order to utilize my helmet mic (for CB) with Blutooth synced phone I have to install a BOMM unit / interface, but do you know if that is also required with the 665? Besides XM and Weather are there any other improvements in the 665 vs the 660? Thanks.

Kraut...thanks for the replies and your wealth of information is appreciated.

Anyone else know more about the 665? Trying to discern a differnce between the 660 and 665 so that I can make an educated choice.

Thanks!
