Tire recommendations
« on: March 04, 2013, 06:20:23 PM »

I have a 2007 CVO Ultra Classic and it is time again to replace the tires. I have 43k mi and have always used the Dunlop D402F
but the mileage sucks. Looking for a better idea. >:(

What kind of mileage are you experiencing and what are you expecting?  Also, what is your riding style?  i.e. aggressive, two up, Interstate, local, etc?

Do some research on the Michelin Commander II, I've read some reports from folks that indicate better mileage than the Dunlops.  I don't have first hand experience however.

I have the same bike with 84k miles and have always used the stock Dunlops.  Usually get about 11k on rear, double that on front.  Some friends report only getting 7 to 8k on the 402 rear.  Don't know why so much difference but lots of my riding is highway so maybe less stopping and starting - don't know.  But I'm planning to give the Michelins a try next time around.

There is a new choice from Metzler Tire: ME 888 Marathon Ultra.   Worth taking a look at.

I have also heard good things about the Commander II from riding friends who run them. I just had a new Dunlop put on my bike at 11,500 miles. Got a good price at H-D of Cartersville, GA, and they were able to install it the same day I called.

Yep, the Avon Venom tires on my Wife's Sporty are cracking too....only 4 years of low miles and garage storage.

Most of my riding is 2up and I will go out of the way to find curvy mountain roads.. My Dunlop rear on my 12 Ultra started dipping before 5k and was worn out by 8k. I went with a Commander II from a local Indy. He says he sells lots of them for our heavy cruisers and everyone loves them.

Thanks everyone, I have been getting about 8k out of the rear and 16k on the front. I ride aggressive by myself and then I ride two up and putt around. The dunlops have always been ok, it just seems like I am putting new tires on it all of the time. I have heard mixed reviews on the Michelins, a have always used Metzlers on my Fat Boy and they have a short life. I am also looking at the new high mileage metzlers ME888. Anybody used them? :2vrolijk_21:

My 09 ultra had one on it when i bought it. no problems, good grip and wore evenly. I cant speak of the mileage as I dont know how many miles were on it when I got it but I dont beleive it had as heavy a weight rating as the OEM or Michellin. Like I said we are usually two up and loaded for weekend trips and I heard only good reviews from the
Commander and was not happy with the Dunlop OEM singing every time I leaned into the twisties.

I have been using Avons or HD tires for over 20 years. I usually go through a set either every year or every other year, due to high mileage. No problems with the sidewall cracking mentioned above, but it looks like mine were changed more frequently. I've heard good things from friends about the Metzlers, but have never tried them myself.

I personally like a stickier tire with a softer compound. They wear quicker than the harder compound tires, but I'm willing to trade mileage for traction.
