5K Service ??
« on: April 08, 2006, 04:40:13 PM »

The orange crate is due for its 5K service. Does anyone know what is involved besides an oil change? I want to switch to Amsoil so will just do my own fluids.

You know, it's interesting that they prescribe checking the spark plugs and replacing the fork oil at 5,000mi. service......after what we've read about all plugs wearing out pretty quickly and needing replacement, I'm surprised in this (esp. when they don't cost that much and it's something else they could charge for anyway)  [smiley=confused5.gif] spyder

Forgot, speaking of fork oil, should I change to the other oil? I'm not sure what its called. I saw a thread on it here and cant find it now. I dont do much myself, only the oil and filter and tranny.
Mike,

It's the Screamin' Eagle fork oil (street version, not the race version).  It's a slightly heavier viscosity, which will increase the damping action of the forks.  If your SEEG is like mine, it couldn't hurt any.  I've always felt the front end is a little "limp".

One of the most overlooked tasks at 5,000 miles, for all of us do-it-yourselfers, is the cable lubrication. It's especially important due to the cruise control unit which does use the cable system. Other than the usual fluids etc, the next most important adjustment is the belt.
I can tell you from experience that a incorrectly adjusted belt / rear wheel alignment is not a good thing. You don't have to return to your dealer, just have a qualified tech check the alignments. Makes a huge difference in roadability. Keep in mind these newer models have DOT4 brake fluid and 24 months is max for top efficiency.
