Need advice on new bars
« on: March 12, 2011, 11:55:32 AM »

I  need to find a more neutral position for my hands & wrists, carpel tunnel stuff!  I don't have the opportunity to check with other bikes at this time.  I have an 08 SERK and find the current bars too low, too narrow and could come to me more so I'm not leaning into the bars.  I'm guessing up about 3 inches, back about 2 to 3 inches and opened up so they are not so narrow.  I talked with the people from Chubby's and they recommend their 515's which I believe is a 10".  Any thoughts about adding heated grips while I'm in there?

Thanks,

Ray G.

I'm using the Wild 1 513 Baby Apes. These are pretty much what you said your looking for. Neutral hand/wrist position, up a little over two inches, back enough that you don't lean forward, and a little widers.

Here's a pic with stock bars

W. O. 513 from somewhat the same angle.  I replaced my OE SERK4 bars for the same reasons you outlined. I like these and no need for new cables.

+1 on the Wild Ones, I have run them on the last couple of baggers I have owned and I have already ordered the 515s for this bike! Wider, straighter, taller, better! They keep my hand from going numb!

I appreciate the replies and photos.  I like the idea of not having to change any cables with the 513's.  Never had the heated grips before are they worth the cost and effort?

Before I bought the SERGU I hadn't thought much of them, now that I have them with the easy to adjust knob on the end of the grip I find myself using them all the time. Well worth it. :2vrolijk_21:

Another option, rather than the HD heated grips, is Heat Demons.  Very easy to install, the switch looks nice, and they WORK.  Plus, they're a lot cheaper!

I don't have any experience with the heated grips, but from what I have read the HD ones burn out quickly if you use them and the heat demons are much better. All I keep reading is about people having the factory ones replaced under warranty a few times.

X2

Go with the heat deamons, then you can use any style grip you want.

Yeah my buddy put it like this and I don't think he could have been more accurate.  A stock Harley seat and bars is like having Somone take an axe to your back between your shoulder blades after a long ride my choice on my roadking was the fat bars that look very similar to the Origanal only they are chrome and internally wired 2" higher and more to the rear and the sundowner seat unbelievable difference and close to the same look it was an expensive upgrade but well worth it as for the heated grips I prefer the heated gloves as the grips are not compatible with internally wired bars

That's what the book says, but all the touring CVO bikes come standard with HD heated grips...wired internally.  They sometimes fail, and sometimes they don't...it's a crap shoot.  The best solution for having heated grips are the Heat Demons, IMO.
