V&H pipes vs SE Pipes
« on: February 21, 2011, 08:45:39 PM »

Many none SE riders use the SE pipes for their bike, In my SERGU 11 comes with SE 4 inches pipes. I understand getting new headers and get the CAth C out to let the engine free. How much improvement is gain with, let's say VH High output pipes vs the SE pipes? And why? Are the SE pipes that restricted? I am thinking on installing the VH heathers first, then run my engine for at least 2000 miles and then do Dino plus fuel mapping, I am not sure on quality of pipes and if change is necessary. I am new at this so please need some help to learn more on this wonderful bike with a nice 110 an want to get the max performance possible out of it. Thanks

Depends what look you like and what you mean by "max performance" I guess.
Good place to start is on this forum, and, here:

Check out what others have to say about different combinations, make a decision and go for it!
JMHO, of course!

Thank you HOGMIKE for your info, A friend that have been driving HD for a long time ask me why I was thinking on changing pipes and a tune. He was recommended by the dealer to change his stock pipes of his new RK to SE pipes. Made me think that the SE pipes are restricted and need a change of cores to increased performance, why the dealer recommended a product that is not to the par. I know that they have to make money but I was just frustrated with the misdirection. I told him to look at fullsac site and V&H but he might be able to fix what he has instead of buying not performing fancy pipes from HD. I posted this to get some insights but I do understand now on HD making par for emission control by the gov. I am still thinking on V&H power duals and High Output pipes or fix my cores with Fullsac and do the stage 2 with fullsac or the mention 555 heads, I think I read they are good but do not know where are they from or where to look for them but I will continue reading I guess. Thanks again Mike  I just takes me time to get things some time  ;D

Great Question!!!

The FullSac is not a fair assessment of just the SE pipes versus FullSac (or less restrictive pipe such as Rineharts, V&H etc).  The Stock includes the restrictive air cleaner, cat header and the SE pipes.

My bike had a catless header, stage 1 air cleaner, PC V with auto tune and Rinehart slipon's.  The noise after 40 years of riding was to much.  Thus, I bought and installed a brand new set of SE 4" pipes to replace my Rineharts.  As I supsected the SE pipes ran almost identical numbers on the Dyno.  Horepower went from 93.8 to 93 and torque went from 111 to 113.  The Rinehart numbers were when the bike was new and it now shas 21000 miles on it.

FullSac themselves admits the 1.75" cores and the louder 2.0" cores provide the best performance numbers over their 2.25" less restrictive cores.  I have had D&D fat cats, Rinehart's and V&H on my rpior bikes.  I think the 4" SE pipes are very good in not excellent performance wise.  They just don't bark at you when get on the throttle and they are "wimpy" sounding at idle.

My high performenace 08 Vette gets better mileage when the muffler system in hte quiet more back pressure mode.  Just doesn't sound as good.

Besides, how many of us ride the bike at the upper end of the RPM where the HP starts to matter.  Torque is what we use most of.

I admit I am having to get use to a guiet bike because it's easy to leave the bike in a lower gear.  My bike like running at about 2900 RPM for good torque and HP numbers.  With the Rineharts at 2900 it was loud.  Now with the SE 4" pipes, I can leave it in a lower gear and run at 2900 and not even notice it.

I road my bike "stock" with the exception of the Rinehart's.  The biggest diufference was getting rid of the stock A/C and the damned cat.

The cat needs to go. One of the first things I did to my RGU was put a V&H propipe chrome on it.
