Re_painting Bushtec Trailer
« on: February 25, 2011, 04:24:37 PM »

Wondering if anyone has disassembled their trailer to paint it or have it painted.  Or did you leave the axle system installed on the trailer and just tape over it?  Needing some advice on doing so.  Bustech says that removing axle system to repaint causes a liability issue and also they do not have a manual that shows the disassembly or reassembly for such. (no torque specs either for reassembly) Also offered a repaint service of up to 3000.00 for CVO tri-color paint job and they do the disassembly and reassembly.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

This stuff is not rocket science. If you choose to do a frame off restoration there are only four bolts on the bottom and two on the side holding the tub to the frame. The wire loom will have to be cut and put back together, but thats not difficult. I didn't really torque anything except by feel cause your dealing with fiberglass to metal. Last summer after the trailer got hit by a SUV going 60 mph the tub stayed on the frame so I can't imagine a problem with that. The rack, lights, rubber seals all come off easily, but the chrome trim around the lid and wheel wells will have to be replaced. I chose not to replace the chrome trim and liked the cleaner uncluttered look otherwise you have to mask it all off.
The easiest way is remove the rack, tail lights, and mask & paint and frankly if I had to do it again that would be my choice. I had a local Corvette shop prep and paint it three tone red for 1352.13 and that's with a lot of fiberglass work...it had holes in it.

email sent, good luck with your project.  Doc
