Bike Build Project
« on: February 15, 2011, 10:12:58 PM »

I took my wife to the International Motorcycle show in Minneapolis. She is only 5'3'' therefore finding a bike that fits her is a challenge. At the show we figured out that she fits on a Suzuki GZ 250 $2900.00, and $29000.00 CVO Convertible. So I was wondering what frame is the convertible built on? I would like to buy a similar bike for her, I'm not sure a $30,000 bike is the right answer for a learner bike. A bike project sounds like fun, something to break in the new shop.

Buy the Suzuki or a Rebel now and let her ride that while you are building the other one.  Better to learn how to use skill to keep a bike upright rather than muscle on something that doesn't have the financial or marital consequences.  She will be ready to jump on the larger one with a lot more confidence.

Unless you have other motives,,, i.e. Sneaking another bike into the stable  ;D. Works every time  :2vrolijk_21:  but wait until she wants to put pink du-dads all over it  :-*

Another good option if you want to stay with Harley is the new Sporty with the 26.2 seat height it would be a good starter! They built it just for that reason! :coolblue:

Go for a used softtail, she will out grow a sporster when she masters riding.

A used Softail Deluxe would be the one I would look for...

She will love the fact that they are built for people who are built lower to the ground.

The seat height is low, the controls are closer to the rider and with bars that come back to meet the rider.

Most likely will do her for a good number of years.

I say the "250" any brand is too small for real world street riding! I bought my wife a Honda Shadow 600 that she rode following me everywhere I went for almost a year. Then sold it for more than I had invested in it. Next she started riding my old 99' Road King Classic, now her ride is a 03' RKC. Build her some type of softail or buy a used Fatboy or similar size bike. Don't put her on too small of a bike. IMO Good Luck.

I have been shopping online and can't help but wonder if a Dyna Low Rider maybe the right answer? I can buy a used Low rider and lower it with shorter shocks and mono tubes from progressive suspension. From what I have gathered so far she needs a seat height of 24 in or less. I'm unfamiliar with the softail models how do you lower a softail?

My wife is 5' even and she can flat foot my bike in running shoes. Bike is not lowered at all.

Seat height is only one factor... the other factor is how narrow is the bike where your legs are. If the bike is narrower, it makes it easier to get your legs close together and your feet down flat.

Wasp waisted:

The area between my thighs is only as wide as the rear cylinder head. It's not so much how tall the seat is, but how wide is what you're straddling?

On the Softail models you can run lowered shocks, air shocks (my suggestion) and then lower the front end. All of this comes at the price of comfort and cornering though.

Sign her up for a rider safety course, and they supply the bikes. They usually have a fleet of Rebels, but have larger bikes in the mix also. There have been occasions where they get through the course and decide being a BSR is for them, but have the skills to ride if the circumstances demand it. Doc

Doc, Good News, she is signed up for the class in May. I can't wait for her to get that under her belt. I hope that her desire grows after taking the class. I'd like to be ahead of the game when she comes home and wants a bike to get some more saddle time. This should be a really fun summer helping my wife learn to ride.
