Sorry didn't make myself clear....I know that I need one but when I go to look they are $39.00 to 179.00
Was wondering what brand,if any has a proven track record.
 Thanks.

There is no need to break the bank, the $39 versions have been doing the job for a lot of folks for a lot of years.  Harley has one for $39, and a new waterproof version available this month for $49.  The ones from Battery Tender (the company) have been pretty much the standard; I've got one that's over 11 years old that still works just fine.  Just make sure you get a "Smart" charger, not a regular trickle charger.  Smart chargers have distinct stages of operation that go from initialization to charge to float automatically.  Constant current trickle chargers just keep right on charging until they either overcharge the battery or you remember to disconnect them.

Many of the high priced versions on the market are either designed for charging multiple batteries at the same time or for charging specialized batteries such as gel batteries.  Unless you plan on using one device to charge several bikes, the less than $50 models are more than sufficient.

The very cheep ones at Wally World (about $20) work fine except !

If you leave it hooked up to the battery but unplug the AC cord it will KILL your battery in a few days.

The ones Wally World sold a few years ago do NOT do this but the new ones do, and the real ones like Battery Tender (Plus)do not do this !

No big deal ... just a head ache if you don't know that fact.

I have 3 different brand names and they all use the same plug & polarity ...

Slacker2, I also recommend the Battery Tender Plus. I get mine from Competition Accessories. They always sell them for $39.99 plus tax. You can go to competition accessories.com or call 800-533-7927. Their part number is SS-BT. CAHDBIKER

X2-Ours are hooked up to the bike whenever the bike is not being ridden.  Extends the battery life greatly especially when the HD batteries are around $160.00..

Hey face racer, Thanks, they list a couple in the H-D cat. One for $39. and another for $139.00 Is more better ??? With all the ones you've had in the past thought I'd ask.

If you only need one the $39 is great. Battery tender plus. Now if your going to need more than one you might concider the multi port job. You can also get extension cords so you keep the tender at the wall and run the charge cord to your bike. My bike sits between cars in the middle of the garage so I ran a cord across the I-beam and dropped it to my bike and the charger stays near the wall out of the way. I used some cheap c clamps to run the cord Through on the I-beam and just tuck it up when i leave for a ride so its not in the way.

I have owned most brands this by far has been the most accurate (clean power) tender I have owned and it's waterproof to boot in case of spills, dust spiders etc.

Just wondering how long on average is your battery's life in years when regularly using a battery charger as opposed to not using one regularly.  The only reason I inquire is because I don't use one regularly and on my last bike the battery was still good when I sold it after having it for 6 years.  While I was in Afghanistan, my 08 set without a charger 10 months without being started and fired right up when I came home on a 30 day leave which during that time I rode almost everyday then set again after I went back to Jalalabad for another 11 months.  When I finally ( and I stress FINALLY ) came back home, I got to the house late and just hooked up my trickle charger until morning then disconnected it and she fired right up again.  Heck, I'm not sure it wouldn't have started without the trickle charge as I didn't try. Have I just been lucky with my batteries?
