New Vance & Hines Slip Ons Issue
« on: February 18, 2011, 04:07:54 PM »

Hey All
Fitted new Vance & Hines high output slip ons when I bought the bike new a few months ago - I am very dissatisfied with the rusting of the inside of each pipe as per the attached pic - is very noticeable & sticks out like dogs balls!! why on earth would that inside sleeve not be made of stainless steel or the like. Have thought of painting on kill rust or the like.
Any other wiser heads than me have a suggestion?
Cheers
Glen.

Looks like V&H cheaped out!  I have their Monster Ovals and they are chromed on that 'inner ring'. Also, I live with-in a couple hundred yards of the ocean, I thought that would have more effect, but hasn't yet.

Have sent a pic & email to Vance & Hines tech dept - interested to know what their response will be.

Take the tips off. Tape it up. Spray with BarBQ (Heat resistant) black spray paint. You'll never have an issue and it'll take 15 minutes to have it looking sharp.

That's probably the best idea, not only to protect them, but it will look good. Oh, and, don't forget to...... :) " throw another shrimp on the bar-bie"

Forgot to mention, if you have a choice with the BarBQ black spray paint, make sure it's "flat", not gloss. That way it'll look like exhaust carbon. Gloss would look strange.

Take a 3M or similar red scuff pad to the area to be painted first, you must create a surface that has something for the heat paint to stick to. Use brake parts cleaner to get it very clean first, clean until your paper towel/rag comes away as clean as new. Then, and only then, paint it, KRYLON has a good 1200 degree exhaust black that holds up very good, if you go to the trouble to prep it first. If you just spray the bare inner pipe, it will just cook/peel off, soon. I did a muffler on one of our cars, that is very exposed, using this procedure two years ago and it still looks like it was done yesterday.

FWIW, I didn't get very elaborate in my prep phase doing a similar project. I had a D&D Fatcat 2:1 with a ghost pipe. The ghost pipe was of course always going to be spotless so I wanted the inside to have at least a semblance of black. The exhaust pipes looked rather odd from behind since the left was nice and shiney when compared with the carboned right pipe. I took some brake cleaner and cleaned the inside of the ghost pipe. Let it dry and then sprayed the inside with the BBQ flat black paint. Of course, this is the easy pipe since there's really no heat (no exhaust flow in the ghost).

Unfortunately the flat black of the ghost pipe really looked different for some reason when compared with the black inside the active muffler. So i decided to take a shot at spraying the inside of the (right) active muffler to see if I could get a better match. I essentially applied the same process. Took brake cleaner with a rag and cleaned up the existing carbon as best I could. Not perfect but not bad. That's it. Then I taped it off and sprayed the inside with flat black BBQ spray paint (Rustoleum). That was 13,000 miles ago and the inside of both the ghost and the active mufflers still look nearly the identical. Nothing peeled or cooked off. Just thought I'd share the details of my experience.

Hmmmm!

Got the same thing. I think I'm going to buy some High Temp Flat Black Rustoleum and dump a whole can in each muffler.

Definitely Sucks.

I've been a believer in Vance and Hines for a long time.  Can you say Engieering Error?

Hey, Vance and Hines! Do you think you might want to take care of the CVO Harley Group?

The problem isn't what's insid. It's what ends up on the chrome tips.

I'm not picky. I just don't want the giant 4" chrome tips sticking out of my $33,000 Harley to start pitting and tarnishing from a crappy design of the interior sleeve.

How'd you mount that Kury license plate frame?

Thanks.
