Cam chain tensioner up grade, glad I did it.
« on: March 09, 2011, 04:48:29 PM »

Just got the bike back  ;D  from having the new cam chain upgrade kit installed along with new lifters and adjstable push rods, cam bearings. Sure glad I decided to do it now, it would not have made in through the summer. The front shoe was over half worn pitted and starting to break off, the rear shoe showed a little wear. The other thing I was amazed with, is how quiet the motor is now. Well worth the money on the upgade...... :orange: :orange:

Just wondering how many miles you had on that beautiful bike when you did the upgrade?

Thanks.

Did the service people happen to say that was low mileage to have this upgrade?

My '05 has over 50k on the dial and the tensioners are still in pretty good shape.

I have extended warranty, but it runs out this year... Maybe I should consider extending it again?

I did mine last year at 30K and same thing, caught it just in time... if you're keeping the bike pay the extra $$$ and upgrade to gear drives so the shoes never have to be replaced again.

There doesn't seem to be a certain mileage to the tensioner issue.  My 05 had around 20K and they were pretty bad.

Glad the gear drive was done @ 25k. Have 36k now and runs great. Just a different sound at idle, a slight whirring sound.

I'm not a big fan of the stealership work and prices, I have a great guy at a local Ind. shop, I decided to have the upgrade based on a lot of the post on this site, he stated that there is no ryme or reason to when or how long, he has seen some with 40m+ and some with less than 20m miles. I did consider gear drive, but based on the postive results I have seen and heard on the hydraulic upgade and the cost of the gear drive I went with the hydraulic, and I am not disappointed that I made that choice. On top of that he also said that he has not seen a failure yet on the hydraulic tensioners, not that there are some I'm sure, but based on the bikes he has checked since they were introduced, he has seen over 50m miles and shoes still in very good shape.

How much did the upgrade cost you? I have a '04 SEDeuce w/ 12,500 miles looking at putting on 5000-6000 miles on this summer. Thinking of doing the upgrade at the end of this season. Really like to know what it's going to cost me. Thanks!

Which upgrade kit was used? I see no cams mentioned.  Thanks Doc

I went with the HD hydraulic cam chain upgrade kit. Did not want to replace my cams, and the added cost.
