Comfort Stitch Tourpak Backrest Fit Issue
« on: March 23, 2011, 07:12:16 AM »

I went back to a H-D Deep Sundowner seat I had on my old bike. Like the feel...and my BSR is more comfortable. Decided to get the Comfort Stitch Tourpak Backrest to match. Now...you would think this would be an easy 5 minute swap. Not so. The mounting brackets on the outside edges stick out much further than the stock unit. As a result I have a big gap on both sides between the tourpak and the backrest sides.  :( Looks like %$@#!  I removed and compared both sets of mounting brackets...they are the same. It appears they should be shorter for a closer fit to the tourpak.

Anybody else swapped out their backrest and had issues with the fit?

I had a similar issue years ago.  I owned an EG Standard and bought a tour pack for it.  After installing the backrest I could never get it to sit flush like the back rests on Classics or Ultras.   That had a badly designed rubber bumper mounting system that would shake the crap out of the backrest.  I played with it for years and couldn't make it right.  Sorry, I'm not any help here.

The part number for the Backrest Bracket on this assembly is 51715-06. I'm not sure if there is another part used on the factory installed backrest. The one's I have seen on Ultras in dealerships don't have this issue so something is different.

Unless I can find a different H-D part...it looks like I will be making some mods to make it fit. That new set of drill bits I bought is gonna see some action soon..... ;)
