Rebuilding 110 Top End
« on: April 05, 2011, 08:22:47 PM »

I reciently posted about a problem with my serk 110. I had it at a local dealer for oil consumption and got it back with one new head and a "sucking" sound from the front cylinder exhaust. Here's where I am. I have it at a local independent shop. This shop has a good reputation. They have torn the top end down and found;
Front cylinder 92 psi rear 125
Poor valve job on new head-front cylinder
Front cylinder has new rings but no hone---poor seating
oil consumption on rear cylinder--oil on plug

I know that I could search through here and write a book on 110 problems but I am pushed for time to get the thing off his lift. Would any of you be kind enough to post what he needs to look for/measure/etc before putting this thing back together? It has been in the shop more than on the road since new and I want to get as much as I can afford fixed correctly this time. Any idea what part number the heads "should be" to match? Any mods to make it run better or hold up would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks in advance!

Were the ACR's disabled, prior to the compression test??
Doesn't sound as though they were.

What would the comp read with the ACR's disabled on a stock 110 vs not disabled?

With ACR's disabled (closed), over 200psi...

With ACR's enabled, 140psi or so....

my ccp for my last 110 was 205-210 compression releases disabled and 155-160 using them.

Yup.
205-207 psi ccp, here, un-hooked.
Never saw a reason to check ccp with the ACR's working.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know which head gaskets should be used? I know there are different ones that will fit but which have proven to work best on these engines?
Thanks, Bill

I replied in your other thread, but I have never had a failure using Cometic gaskets...   :2vrolijk_21:

On the old engines,
there was a way with the jugs off, to check the wear on the lower end by laying machinists ruler across the block and measuring the side to side play in the rods...

Is this still an easy way to measure the strength left in the lower end with con rod wear?

And what is this talk about welding up the crank on the lower end and adding a Timken bearing?  I don't have any problems, but if I did and had the top end torn down I might like to do this super mod and also send the flywheels out to be balanced if you do such a thing these days.

I loved the simpicity and strength of the early shovelheads that I started out in HD with, a 1966 Shovel jammed into a 57 rigid frame, but those engines were tired on the lower end at 50,000 to 89,000 kms if you ran them hard.  They also had only about half the power of these new engines.  Anyway please enlighten me on the crank test above and the crank mod mentioned and if you can balance these...

Best regards from Australia, Harley still rules, there is always faster, smoother bikes, but they just don't have the sound and Soul of a Harley.... 8)
