And another thing!!
« on: April 21, 2006, 04:13:56 PM »

You know the old saying...A guy walks up and says how ya doing? You reply OK, but add if I wasn't who would listen or care anyway!

Therefore, thats what I dig about boards like this. It's a way to vent [smiley=drink.gif] without getting drunk over something. If I got drunk everytime I was pissed off, I'd be a mess by now  ;D

As some of you remember from my first post here I'm buying a 06 FLHTCUSE Black Candy Crimson and Charcoal Slate. This ordeal has brought on my current gripe...what the hell is the MoCo thinking!

Podiums Time (kick me off when you've heard enuff!  ;D

Here is Harley Davidson, a few years back they start into this aggressive sales program. They increase production. They decide on a financing program that short of Bin Laden, ANYBODY COULD QUALIFY FOR! What happens next is the kicker!

I do not know how long or many of you have been riding, buying or selling Motorcycles but I've been at it a good long time. Over the years the battle of Jap bikes vs. Harley has always amused me. For as long as I can remember Harley's have always maintained their value much better than other brands except durnig the AMX years. The argument I encounter most often is when someone says they are buying a new bike but will choose a Japper due to the lower price. I point out that if you go spend 15,000 bucks on a Jap bike in 10 years it's practically worthless when you could do the same with a Harley and in 10 years get a huge chunk of your money back. For example, in 1995 I bought my FXDL 2 tone Dyna Lowriderand paid $17,500.00. I kept a close eye on the market value of the bike for several years. Up until about 4 years ago I could have sold her for a fair market price of $14,500.00. Not bad to have a daily rider for 6 years and only lose $3000.00 in the process. That's not just a good investment it's what had most smart buyers wanting Harleys other than for the novelity of being a real "part time" weekend bad ass biker.

Whats my point? The point is with this "Finance anydamnbody program" that Harley uses has bitten my butt but good. Harley has a 30 percent repo rate going now with buyers who should have been buying shoes for their hungry kids losing the bike within the first year. The market is now flooded with used bikes driving used bike values down to sad sad prices.

My 1995 Dyna now has a trade in value of $6000.00 pathetic dollars. On the fair open market it could yeild between $8000.00 to $9500.00

This makes me sick when I think about how much care was put into this bike over the years to keep her gleeming and running like new. The cost of that alone wasn't no penny ante poker game either. People like myself busted ass to have a good ride and in doing so promoted the value of owning a Harley to the general public....now this!

The way I see it now is this. I can either sale her and take a beating, or winterize her and store her away for another 10 years. Roll her out as a 20 year old classic in bristol condition and get a return on my money then.

Thanks for listening...I only hope the joy of owning the new ride will drown out the pain of literally having to give my old ride away....

That's why my 97 DWG sit in the garage wainting to be ridden.  It's worth a whole lot more to me than to anybody else.  It can sit and rot for all I care.  I ain't giving it away.

Rusty,
What the hell HD is thinking is called business just like EXXON but on a smaller scale. The financing is only a part of it, unless you are buying a CVO you don't wait for a new bike like you did a few years back. IMO the availability of new bike is the main thing driving down the prices of used bikes. Why pay new bike prices for a one or two year old bike when you can walk into a dealer and buy a new one?
Don't know about your experiences but mine has been anytime I go to "trade" in any vehicle including a Harley you loose your a$$. An 11 year old vehicle even if it is a HD is still 11 years old and the market of folks wanting it is limited no matter how much you baby it. I had a 99 Ultra with 37,000 on it and damn near had to give it away 4 years later, everyone was afraid of the mileage. Like it or not the wave has crested on HD. Being able to get a large part of your money back is a thing of he past, granted its still better than the Jap bikes but it's not what it used to be.

I agree with all 3 post above. After I posted today I was thinking in terms of "when did it actually turn sour" Not that it matters any, fact is it went south and that's that's...but I do know when it happened. It happened when people could go into a dealer and get a Black Fat Boy right off the floor. It was really a done deal when you could walk into a dealer and see 3 Black Fat Boys waiting to be sold. ahhh yes...Corporate America in it's finest hour

It's also sweet to know (pending no problems of course) that when my new baby arrives it'll be the last motorcycle investment for this ol' cowboy-win, lose or draw!

Hey seuceg!

We are about the same "vintage" and I told myself AND my wife the same story.  I love my new ride, had it about a month, BUT....

Those liquid cooled Ultras on the horizon sound inticing... [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

I think it all went sour for a lot of businesses, not just H-D, when Wall Street started punishing companies who didn't post double digit growth rates year after year.

I feel your pain seuceg,
I just traded in a 1997 fatboy in fantastic condition to get my FLHTCUSE. I saw a change in the market too when cofidence started to build in the twin cam motor. When it first came out it had problems and you could get a good price on the proven EVO motor bikes. Once many folks started accepting the twin cam and magazines started singing it's praises as well as the benifits of fuel injection it appeared to me the bottom fell out of the used evo bikes.
Along with what others have posted Harleys got so expensive only an older rider could afford one and his riding years are going to be less than a younger person in general. So as the Baby Boomers age the group of Harley riders will get smaller unless the MOCO can sell less expensive and dependable  bikes to a younger crowd to attract loyal  long term riders.
(Just thinK of all the estate sales with older Harleys hitting the market in a few years)

Hi seuseg,
You have correctly analyzed the marketing and the effect it has had on the used bike prices. I do not think you can blame HD alone for their finance and marketing plans since almost every auto manufacture has had to switch to 0 down, 0 % for 60 months to make their products sell. True, this does create the same situation with used cars. I just sold my 97 Ultra and was lucky to find a buyer willing to pay a little extra for a low milege well cared for ride. The local dealer about ran me out of the showroom when I mentioned "TRADE". I used ultrapolecat's "last new bike" excuse...shoot, I thought I invented that idea. I think the fact that I could not have it right now contributed to my decision to purchase the SE so maybe these models will be purchased by us old farts with enough patience to wait a little while. :P
