thinking about 2004 SE electra glide, need input please
« on: April 12, 2011, 07:32:38 PM »

i currently have an 04 1200xl and have decided that i want a touring bike, after riding my dad's every chance i got.  my local dealer has a 2004 screamin eagle electra glide for sale that i am pretty interested in.  i took it for a test ride and was pretty impressed.  now to my real question, does anyone have any feedback as to how the older screamin eagle 103's perform against the newer regular 103's or newer 96's also.  my dad took out a 2010 ultra limited with a 103 motor on the test ride, and when we both got on the bikes he was able to stay right with me. i know that the technology on the 04 is 7 model years old but in my head that i was expecting it to spank the limited, with a tour pak and heavier rider.  im just trying to weigh the cost verse benefit of buying the SE from a performance standpoint. any feedback or input is greatly appreciated.  adam

I love my 103, the newer 103 is not a true 103, I have over 25m miles with no issue, the one thing you need to find out from the dealer, has the cam chain tensionerrs been replaced. Known issue with these wearing out anywhere from 15m miles and up. I just switched to the new hydraulic cam chain tensioner from HD. Huge difference in the bike. Oh yea, my front tensioner was all but worn out, the rear still had 3/4 life in it. I highly recommend the 103.

Personally, I wish the 103" that was in my SEEG (Screamin Eagle Electra Glide) was in my 2010 SESG (Screamin Eagle Street Glide) instead of the 110".  That motor (the original 103") is a proven work horse and many of the guys here are still riding them. :2vrolijk_21:

Perhaps the only bike Harley did better than the 04 SEEGs was the 05 SEEGs.  Really good machines.  You'll enjoy it if you take the plunge.

the real 103 is truly a masterpiece.  my buddy and i bought new bikes on the same day.  he bought a 2011 scarlet red street glide with the new 103 (which i am told is the same tried, true, and trusty police motor that the cops have been running for years).  i bought the 2011 CVO SGSE with a 110.  the difference is staggering.  they are not even close.  it seems to me to be a bigger difference from the 110 to 103 than there is from 103 to 96.  the new 103 isnt remotely close to what the SE 103 was.  just my humble opinion of course.

The current 103 that's an upsized 96" motor and the 103" from the SEEG era aren't the same motor.  Which is fortunate for all of us with SEEGs.
