2001 Road King just stops
« on: April 13, 2011, 01:42:33 PM »

I've got a buddy with a 2001 RK with a 95" motor (He did the Mackie package....bike goes like hell), unfortunately not very far.  Thingss to note:

1) He can start the bike, and the little red "key" on the dash (for the security system) lights up and stays on.  He can ride the bike for +/-10 miles or so and the bike just goes dead.  Shut the bike off and wait 20 minutes and it'll run again for another 10 miles or so. The red key light on the dash never goes out. I thought that was supposed to go off when the bike is running?

2) When the bike goes dead, the red "key" is still displayed on the dash and the red engine light next to it comes on.

Any thoughts???

Injected or carb?

Yes the key should go out, you'll need to pull the codes to see what's going on there.

Matt, does the engine shut off or do nearly all the electrics go away?  If the latter a first and easy thing to try is the main power breaker.  In the hole up in front of the battery.  It's what predated the maxi fuse like your 05 has.

Those breakers did fail occasionally.  Tell your buddy to visit a local parts store.  Should be readily available in their section that has fuses, plugs, maxi-fuses, etc.  Buss makes them and they're cheap.  I always used to run with a spare in the bottom of the saddlebag.

Exactly where I was going if it was injected!

The check engine light will drop a code if you turn the ignition on and off twice. Count the flashes between pauses, it will repeat the sequence if you don't get it right the first time around. I'm sure someone here has the codes for the M&M bikes. I can email the instructions and codes if you need them. I had a similiar problem last month and it turned out to be the crank sensor.  Lou

Check the bank sensor.   There were quite a few of these that went bad on the earlier models.   After the bike resets it will start and run again for just a bit then shut off.

The only way to catch it throwing a code is to leave the bike on when it shuts down and hook up a digital tech to it.

Good Luck,

Check the bank sensor.

He said the bike had an alarm system installed.  So the original lean angle sensor isn't there anymore.  Alarm system incorporates the lean angle sensor and TSSM together.
