Heavy Breather vs Stage I Filter?
« on: June 14, 2011, 04:38:33 PM »

Have an 03 SERK with the 103 . . . pulled the air cleaner cover off and see I have the Stage 1 HD filter (HD #29442-99).

I suspicion it had a remap when it and V&H Slips ons were installed by the original owner.

Thinking about going with an SE Heavy Breather, but don't want to just spend the bucks for the "cool" factor . . . but, if it will breath better, I would swap the current high flow filter for the Heavy Breather on the old 103.

Thoughts?

(Oh, and want to decide before adding the PCV about ready to order with preloaded map.)

I'm not an expert on this but if you already have the Stage one A/C the gain would be very minor, if it made a big improvement than you would need the map or a retune.  When it was time to increase the flow I needed I went with the Zippers Maxi air filter with a simple chrome cover, good air flow without the size.  The SE Heavy Breather is to large for my taste.  Any chance of getting info where you purchased the bike?  Is there a place that you trust to do your work if and when you will need some in the future.  It might be the time to locate a shop for such inquires in your area if possible.  For the record I have had a number of post not answered for one reason or another and sometimes I receive some replies that are just very generous in the time it took.  Wish I was more help to you.

Good Luck

I agree with RayG, probably not that much difference in total flow. I'm on the other side already with a heavy breather and like the look, although it took we a while to warm up to it! IMO the Stage I Filter would look better on your ride, but it's a matter of personal taste.

Thanks for answering . . . yeah, it is either feast or famine getting answers on the website . . . when the answers  come, it is some amazing help!  I think the slow answers may be sometimes because what I have is a 9 year old CVO.  I also think it might have to do with the weather whether or not answers come . . . if the weather is good, we are all out riding . . . should wait to ask questions when there are nationwide thunderstorms!

Doing all the work myself . . . bought the manuals used and and signed up here on the CVO forum and just started digging in!  Learning a lot from forum members and trial and error!

I just ordered a PCV yesterday . . . so that will take care of whether the bike had been mapped right . . . makes it moot now.  I had an 03 Fatboy . . . did a stage 1 and pipes and paid for the one time download mapping at the dealership . . . it just never idled right after that and they wanted another $250 for a remap . . . was about to buy a power commander then when the bike was totaled.

Pretty much identified from other forums that moving from the SE Stage I kit to the SE Heavy Breather might gain me no more than another 3 cfm . . . so, for now I am gonna hold off on the Heavy Breather . . .

But I do really like the look of he Heavy Breather over the stock football . . . so, I will keep a watch out for a used one, and if cheap enough, I will buy it and put it on . . . just get a different map for the PCV then.

Now, I have to go to the basement and finish putting the new Wild 1 Chubby 8.5 mini-apes on the bike!

Thanks again for answering.
