TTS MasterTune questions
« on: May 28, 2011, 06:23:01 PM »

Greetings,
New to this forum, and I hope my search was thorough enough to not post a redundancy right away.

I purchased TTS Mastertune and am having some difficulty.  I check for updates every time I start the program.

2008 Road King police with the stock 103/1690, a Ness Big Sucker intake and V&H oval slip-ons part number 16727.

I selected the DTQ205-03-A0.MT8 template file:

Application: 2008-2009 'All Market' Drive-by-Wire Touring Bikes
Configuration: 1690 A/C & Race Exhaust
Components:
-- A/C and Breather Kit
-- 3 7/8" Big Bore Cylinders
-- 3 7/8" Big Bore Flat Top Pistons
-- Race Exhaust

The provided cam settings in that file are intake open: 20 BTDC close: 40 ABDC
My research indicates the stock cam in my 103 is the same as the 96's: intake open: 12 BTDC close: 30 ABDC

There are no instructions to change this for initial tuning and I would think these settings are very important to injector and/or spark timing.  The tuning guide section 4.3 also does not mention setting all accel enrichment values to zero as indicated in box 4c of the flowchart near the end.  Since the flowchart was added 3/22/2011, I assume that to be more accurate, please correct me if I am mistaken here.

Should I use intake open and close values just before and just after respectively (-13 and 31)?  Before tuning or after?  The transfering these settings results in a change to the intake close only, going from setting #3 to #2

Hoping someone else has encountered this and can either offer advice or provide a good starting template file for my bike.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

gyver,
Moved your thread to the appropriate technical board so (hopefully) your (technical) question can be answered. If you want to start another thread (nontechnical) to introduce yourself in the New Member Introduction please do so.

Welcome McGyver, glad to see you took my advice and tried on here.  I know I was no help on the phone, but I am quite sure someone will be along shortly to help you out.

McGyver,

I just took a look at this, and the stock settings for my bike, also with a stock cam, show the same settings.  I opened up the estimator and it says "Settings here are a good starting point, but the optimum settings will be found by following the test procedure in the Tuning Guide.

·   Adjust the "Intake Opens" slider to the point just prior to the Intake Valve Opening.
·   Adjust the "Intake Closes" slider to the point just after the Intake Valve Closes."

Is it possible these setting are optimal based on the above?  Seems counter intuitive, because I would, reading this, probably set Intake Open to 10 rather than 20.

Thank you for responding.  I had figured "just prior" 12 BTDC to be 13, and "just after" 30 ABDC to be 31.  Transferring these into the configuration does not affect the intake open setting (if you watch the bottom of the estimator it will show when the setting would change, in this case to #5 at 11 BTDC).  31 did make the intake close setting go to #2 (changes at 33 ABDC).  I uploaded the template file with this change, accel enrichments zeroed out, AFR maxed, and closed loop at 781.  Both 02 sensors show activity in the Data Master record screen and all appears well but the bike runs about the same (not happily).

Is it SUPPOSED to run this way, and progressively improve each time I use VTune to merge recording data into the working file and upload the result?

You'll have to define "not happily".  From talking to people that have VTuned (as you know, I haven't), It does get better each and every time.  Most do a minimum of 4 VTune runs, some do more.

I needed a ride today, so I decided to try a data record to see what happened.  Things improved so I did 2 more and the suggested changes on the last one were all less than 5%.  I set the AFR, Accel Enrichment, and PE mode RPM back to original and rode it 259 awesome miles today.  Still some decel pop, but it runs MUCH better.
