Director of our local HOG had a lunched engine in his 07 that tow(ed) a color matched American Legend.  After the first repair, under extended warranty, the dealer said that they would not honor the warranty further unless he sold the trailer.  He sold the trailer and hitch, brought in bill of sale, and had dealer sign it, saying his warranty would be honored (this guys wife is a lawyer).  Apparently, the warranty rep was PISSED about this.   Funny thing is, about 6 months later, the engine lunched again.

The service dept manager told me flat out, if it comes in for warranty work, and it's stock, they don't know anything about the past  ;)

I've bought 2 Ultras, and a SEUC and remained loyal to them when I could have shopped around.  Loyalty brings loyalty (in most cases)

You spend your money, and you takes your chances!

Agree, depends on what kind of relationship you have with your dealer!

I can't disagree, in many cases the dealership can greatly influence decisions on warranty or ESP.  But I personally wouldn't allow that to cloud my judgement when it comes to believing some of the BS that you might encounter on one of these forums or from certain sales people.  Warranties and extended service plans are legal contracts, and both the customer and the provider have legal rights and responsibilities under those contracts.  You don't have to kiss some service manager's posterior, or buy 3 or more bikes at inflated prices, to assert your rights under the terms of the warranty.  Now, if you're looking to get something you're not entitled to, then I guess a little posterior kissing will probably get more done than raising hell.  I still seriously doubt I'd let some dealership employee tell me I have to sell my trailer before he would fix my engine, but that's just me and my hard head.  I'd be more inclined to sell the POS motorcycle and buy something that has a better record for reliability, like a Yugo perhaps. ;)

No dealer is ever going to dictate to me what I can or cannot do to my own property regardless of the outcome. Again I have a hard time believing that a 180 pd trailer is going to make anymore difference than a 180pd passenger. It's a cheap way for them to get out of paying for something that they should be paying for. If the weight thing is the the main reason the MOCO wants to deny warranties then I can show them thousands of pictures with just a rider and passenger that exceeds the gvwr on a bike. It's bull and they know it!!!! Now if they can prove that you have exceeded the gvwr and the excess stress caused the problem then more power too them. If I remember right you have exceeded the gvwr when you hit approx. 420pds. They are just looking for an out and we are letting them have it by laying down for it.

Howdy,
Going to reopen this thread,

I messed up, motor went south, I signed an extended warranty about 3 months ago. Took the bike to my local CVO mechanic and when Warranty people came to his shop. They voided my warranty because of the trailer hitch.
Price for the repair is going to be $4600 . ouch.

A little background: Going across hiway 40 to Tenn from Cal. We detoured to Roswell, NM and had HD look at the bike, it was missing a little. They found nothing wrong with it, stopped to have Oklahoma City, World HD look at it and change the fuel filter, they said it was running fine too. Then to Memphis HD I had them take a look at it too. They said keep riding it until I asked them to change the oil and found the metal shavings in the oil.

I thought it interesting that Memphis HD sells Trailers.       I also thought is interesting that whether you tow or not, just having a hitch would void the warranty.

Not interested in what I should have done, or the I told you so's,  but if anyone has any experience with what, if anything can be done. I am planning on eating the cost, but it does taste like chit.      :'(         thanks, Fred

Sorry to hear this Fred, but the ESP (service contract) is not the same as a factory warranty, and it doesn't fall under the Federal warranty statutes.  The actual contract you have should spell out whether or not towing is reason to refuse coverage.  If it specifically states it won't cover failures if you tow anything, and you really were towing, you probably have no recourse.  I would invite the ESP administrator and whoever you bought the contract from to refund your money, since they won't pay for repairs.  That should help a little toward that repair bill at least.

Yep that is the way I believe it will play out. I am waiting for the ins contract, but believe it doesn't say anything about towing , just if a hitch is installed warranty can be voided.

thanks for the input.

Fred, assuming the service contracts haven't changed since 08 it's likely that you're hosed.  Have a contract in a drawer that's been around since a buddy got it in 08.  Here's how it reads in its "section 6" :

"This contract does not cover and it does not apply to any loss or expense if your motorcycle is used or equipped for towing."

Sorry Fred.  Hate to read of the hassle and the expense.  I've got hitches on mine too.  Knowingly so.  They should offer a prorata refund of the service contract purchase cost.  But that's likely all the recovery you'll see.

What you are going through is why I did not re up my extended warranty when I had a chance.  I pull a trailer so I figure I saved the warranty money and put it in the kitty in case my motor becomes a casualty.

Sorry about your bad luck.

Don't pull a trailer, but recently had the opportunity to re up my extended warranty and decided I wouldn't.... going to keep the money in my savings... and be the benefactor of the interest (instead of the MoCo/ESP Provider). :2vrolijk_21:
