Apehanger Question
« on: June 07, 2011, 10:58:04 PM »

I have a friend with apes on a street glide and they move on him. How do you stop them from moving. We don't dare try tightening the bolts anymore.

It may not be the bars, but the handlebar bushings.  Mine do the same, and I'm just waiting for a good time to change them to a new neoprene set that are more rigid.

Do you mean the whole assembly move a bit or that the bars move within the clamps?  If there's some greater or lesser amount of shake to the whole kit follow the doc's advice and check the handlebar bushings.  If the bars are moving within the clamps, however, you've got a problem that really needs to be solved.  It's not safe if the bars can suddenly and unexpectedly pull back at you.

Making the assumption the new bars aren't poorly machined and simply have a too small OD where they clamp only one other likely option comes to mind.  That for whatever reason the clamps and/or risers are worn.  Perhaps they'd been loose before and someone rolled a handlebar within them way too much?

If the clamps are tight and if the new handlebars are ok the riser/clamp combination is the only other parts in the mix.  Fortunately they're not frighteningly expensive.  Have seen worn risers stuffed with aluminum foil as a "temporary" fix to keep bars tight.  Doing anything other than actually fixing it is a dumb idea.

Sometimes you have to drill and pin them in place.

Have only seen that become necessary with tall bars.  How much ape is in these hangers?

I agree. It should take a whole lot of leverage to move tha bars in the risers. This isn't something you see on mini-apes.

I put a set of 18 inch  on my Fatboy and had the same problem  looked in the Drag book and found a set that uses a nut and bolt set up through the riser, this fixed the problem .....

Tighten the front bolts first to the proper torque, next the rear bolts. That puts more clamping force on the bar.
