From my personal experience, the main difference in the newer tanks, there is no cross-over tube fron side to side under the tank.

On my 08 I usually just grab a paper towel at the station and wrap around the nozzle to keep slash down till it is close to full, then just deal with small clicks of the pump to top it off. Work for me?

I also fill mine from the saddle and have no spills.
