103 Motor Problem  -- Is There a Rotor Issue?
« on: May 21, 2006, 08:38:06 PM »

Hi Guys,

Can anybody relate to this?  The following excerpt was taken from an Ebay ad.  I do not want to cause the seller any problems, but he raises a very serious issue if it is true.  Can anybody verify what he is saying about a rotor problem on the first 103 ci Harley SE motors?  Check out the commentary, quoted ver batem, and then see the ad.  Thanks.

"While there I met a Harley mechanic with a lot of experience with the 103" motors. Apparently the first year of the 103 motor, Harley got the shim thickness for the compensator wrong and if left alone this can cause catastrophic engine damage. We pulled the primary and sure enough there was minor damage to the rotor, but no crankshaft damage. I had the rotor replaced, the corrected shim and nuts installed. If you are considering any 2003 103", make sure the proper repairs have been done, or have them done yourself."

Check the Ebay as out for yourself.

First off I would not believe anyone from New Port Richie. If there is a problem HD should have a TSB on it and any dealer should know about it.

I'm not saying that this is not true but it is the first time I have ever heard of it. I can check on it Tuesday morning as "The VOON" will be back at work. If anyone will know it will be him.

Be Safe

Can't say I've heard of a problem related to a shim, but there have been plenty with loose compensator nuts which will trash the rotor, among many things.  H-D went to a new torque procedure in production last year to help address the issue.  Go here  http://flhrsei.org/attachments/compnut.pdf  for the service bulletin.  This issue coincides with the change from the Timken bearings to the plain roller bearing on the crank for the 2003 models, and would affect all TC engines, not just the 103's.

I don't know why my comp nut came loose, may be the shim  but all I know is that it ruined my crank and that sucked :(. But the good thing is that my 103 turned into a 113 ;) while it was apart and now it is a real screamin eagle.

This is legit. It happened to the 03 SERK I bought new that year. Lunched the entire primary, luckily I stopped as soon as I heard it go and the crank shaft did not get damaged. Still, everything inside the primary had to be replaced. I knew of three other people who bought 03's that experienced the same problem. No way of knowing what happened with the 03 SERK I am riding now as the previous owner destroyed his Maintenance Records, but I have had the primary apart and everything is aligned and tight. I would caution anyone buying a used 03 to check this or find out if it had been repaired by the previous owner and make sure if you can you get coverage via a used bike warranty.
