How to check tire pressure FLHTCUSE5
« on: June 11, 2011, 10:38:44 PM »

OK I need help!
Tried to check and set my pressures on these Dunlop's.
I need a little hand holding here.  I let out more than I put in because its hard to get on the chuck.
How do you guys do it.  I figure I need the special air gauge.

While I am at it what pressures do you guys run?

Do you use the nitrogen?  at home?  How do you get?

I have air compressor handy. If I get it figured out I'll check it regular.

Thanks

I use about 97% nitrogen....the rest is whatever is in the air.

For both filling and checking I have a 'special' chuck and guage that are sorta low profile.

You need to get you an air guage with a 90 degree head, and with a low profile.  Here's the one I use:  http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/product/11482/Longacre_Tire_Gauges

Front tire is no problem. Harley did us no
favors putting the air nipple in the center of the
rear rim. I use the old style air hose with psi gauge,
the kind you see at the "service stations". I thread it
through the first opening in the rotor, then straight down.

Oh yea...using Nitrogen in the tires is a bunch of BS, in my opinion.  Just check the pressures every couple of weeks and you'll be fine.  40psi rear, 36psi front, or follow the owners manual recommendations if you have the stock tires.

Straight air for me....seeing that air is about 78% nitrogen anyway.

H-D could have been nice and used an angled valve stem, but of course they don't think about customer convenience.  Maybe they assumed you would take it to the dealer every time you needed the air pressure checked. :confused5:

TCinBham gave you the hot tip, a 90° head on your pressure gauge.  You'll also want a 90° chuck on your air hose if you don't already have one.

As for air pressures, the owner manual is the best source for that information.  I believe your model calls for 36 psi front and 40 psi rear, but you should verify by checking the manual.

As for nitrogen, if someone will give it to you free then it's fine.  It really isn't any better for street machines than the 78% nitrogen we all get for free from any standard compressor, and as long as you don't fall for the bogus claims and think you never need to check your air pressure again then feel free to use it if you want.  If someone wants to sell it to you, do yourself a favor and say no thank you.

The EZ-Air tire gauge by Stop & Go products make checking, filling and adjusting tire pressures a pleasure. A well designed chuck attaches to the tire's valve with one hand. Gauge, bleeder valve and air valve is at the end of a short flexible hose, so everything can be done away from the tire. Works like a charm.

Red Eagle, I hear what you are saying about airing up the rear tire. I am going to see if they make a 90 degree valve stem that I can have installed when I get my next rear tire that the HD dealer will "approve". When I come home from a ride I usually try to make sure my bike is parked so that the rear valve stem is at the bottom. I still have to lay down on the garage floor to check it. I use a HD tire pressure gauge (the one with the flexible hose) to check it. And a standard air chuck, the one with the small round head to add air. Mine will usually stay right at 36 and 40 for at least two weeks. I did see one advertised in the back of Cycle World Magazine from a company called KurveyGirl  625-444-5022 http://www.kurveygirl.com/shop/ , but I haven't checked on it yet. Good Luck CAHDBIKER REVISION TO MY POST: I went out and took a look at my bike after I made this post and I think to be effective a valve stem would have to be very close to a 90 degree bend coming out of the rim and not cause an issue with being too close to the rear disc. Maybe a straight one, but a little shorter than stock would be good also.CAHDBIKER

The EZ gauge looks Great!  I made one out of two different gauges!  I can't recommend my approach...*L
I am real busy at work right now but I will post some pics for chuckles when I get some time.  I have to work out of town this weekend...UGH!!
