Don, spent a lot of time studying the wiring diagrams for the '04 and '06 interconnect harnesses regarding the audio stuff before buying the HK and BAMI kit to be sure it would work.   Heck, the BAMI kit is listed as being for '07 and newer models, but a simple swap of the Molex connector on the left side handlebar switch harness, and replacing it with the Deutsch connector used on the '06 and older models made it a plug and play installation.

Don, you are right I just finished the install and it only took about 5 minutes to make the 6a connector needed.  Carl, thanks again for the help.  Now if I could just find a CVO Ipod....

That's what I noticed after comparing the wiring diagrams Carl.  Without thinking as much about it as I obviously should have had expected it it to be a major chore trying to do things the original harness was never intended to allow.  But it's a simple addition is you've been good enough to make very apparent.  This was something I was very pleased to learn.  Don't have the HK in my bike anymore but one never knows when a project might come upa gain.  If no other reason than simple curiosity about the potential flexibility I was glad to see this worked through.  Thanks man, appreciate it.

So glad that it was a simple chore and that I was completely full of it at the beginning of this thread.  Simple and cheap solutions are always a good thing.  Great to read you stumbled on a real problem that both the simple and cheap variety of answers.  Now when she's all buttoned up you'll need to share your impressions :2vrolijk_21: .

The HD XM and Ipod accessories are overpriced compared to aftermarket head units that will do the same functions.  In my case, I wanted a "clean" CB installation so I replaced the Biketronics interface and Sony headunit I had on the bike; otherwise, I'd still have the BT/Sony set-up.

On the other hand, anyone who wants to add the HK (and accessory modules) to an older bike can do so with relative ease.  I have the HD Ipod module awaiting installation, and if I had a Road Tech 660/665 I'd be installing the NIM, as well.

Was looking at all that this evening Carl.  It's a surprise how "forward-flexible" the old bike can be with this system.

Way back in the dark ages when I did the HK conversion on my 05 it was an interesting exercise too.  Especially since everyone was saying "can't be done."  Then when the head unit crapped out I spent less and put in a Sony with the adapter parts.

I had no use for the CB so was never losing anything I wanted.  The little "digital media player" head units with bluetooth built and the rear aux adapter for the GPS hook-up make it do everything I'll ever want.  But it's still a very interesting exercise to see how much more can be done with the HK retrofit.  Nice job :2vrolijk_21: .

Don,

Used the search function tonight to find an old thread of yours from '06 when you installed the HK and HD XM on your bike--you were ahead of your time on that one.  I'm sure I didn't see it when I started thinking about installing the HK w/ CB on my '04 EG; rather, the thread that showed up when I googled the topic was that it couldn't be done--plenty of inaccurate information, especially the software mods--but, studying the wiring diagrams convinced me that it should work--wish I'd seen your thread before I started.

I really like the further capability you've added with yours Carl.  If my head unit had stayed good I'd have played with it more later.  As is I zigged where you zagged.  Glad you did too as it keeps the subject alive and allows the progress to continue.

Have actually been considering getting an HK core and sending it off to Iron Cross to have it made as reliable as it might be and doing the deed in my old 2000 Road Glide.  The tape player in that bike lost the novelty of its antiquity a long time ago.  So will gladly steal from your lessons when/if the time comes.

A buddy hooked me up with a supposedly "dead" HK which led me to contact Tony at Iron Cross Audio for the first time in Oct. '09.  Turns out the HK had locked up due to a software malfunction that Tony was able to fix, as well as upgrade--it's worked perfectly since ICA's repair.

One of the things Tony mentioned was that the HK could have a software mod to use the vehicle speed sensor that's used on the '05 and older bikes for the AVC, rather than the serial data for vehicle speed used on the '06 and newer bikes.

Good to keep alive a thread on the retrofit for those considering it.  I've also heard from guys who've successfully installed the HK in '02 and '03 EG's.

Their (Iron Cross) software mod for AVC works too.  Put an HK radio in a buddy's 02 Road Glide last year and radio was sent in for that upgrade before installation.  Worked like a charm.  Was cheap too.  If memory serves they charged $40 for the service.
