Compensator: turn back now?
« on: June 26, 2011, 12:02:52 PM »

Comp crapped out at 10k, replaced, crapped out again. I am 500 miles into a 2000 mi ride. The next 1000 will be in the desert, and it's Sunday. Low rattle, whine/gear lash. Rattling, not knocking yet.
What happens next - will it damage other stuff or leave me stranded? Should I ride the 500 miles back home, or keep on for 1500 more? Any worst case scenarios appreciated!

Mine clacked away for 9 thousand miles before W repair...and only did spring packs, I paid for the rest of the "assembly"..good for now.  Good luck!

A loose comp nut can damage the rotor and stator, the crank, etc.  Get it fixed before riding it any long distance!

How long since the first repair?  Could be that they didn't do the repair properly and damaged the replacement thrust washer, or they could have left something loose.  I wouldn't just assume it's OK and ride another 1500 miles unless I had a chase truck following me.  But I guess it all depends on how much any inconvenience and being stranded bothers you.  In my youth, I would've taken the risk.  In my dotage, probably not.

For all who have or had compensator problems here is a reprint of the service bulletin from 2005 on properly installing and torqueing the compensator nut. It should not be any different for current bikes, if it is please enlighten me.

Ah the impetuosity of youth!
I pushed on, sort of - the desert turned out to be way too hot for me, so I re-routed a bit, ended up dong a total of about 1500 miles instead of 2000.
Did a little slow-motion tour of every gas station lot, gave a good listen. The whirring/gear lash noise remained, but didn't get any worse. No new noises developed. This was my weekend of vacation before having to go back to work, so I was being stubborn. And I was rewarded with two solid days of beautiful riding.  :bananarock:

It was replaced at about 12,000 mi, we're now at 16,700. Bringing it in today to let them have another whack at it. I wonder if they've seen the service bulletin?

Thanks everyone for the replies. grc probably sealed the risky deal - I'm in my mid-thirties. Still young enough to do stupid chit, *almost* old enough to start listening to reason...
