Cost for cam install?
« on: August 08, 2011, 11:09:46 PM »

Just trying to see what's the average cost for having cams installed with new head gaskets and dyno tuned.

I too would be interested in what is a reasonable cost for the cam and head gasket install.  Or just an idea of how long that should take a good mechanic to do.

I'm thinking of doing the Fullsac Stage II on the 2012 SG I have coming.  I know what the parts will cost from Steve.  Just trying to get an idea about what the install should run.

good rule of thumb 4 hours cam change, 4 hours piston change

I had a set of S & S 510 G cams, S & S adjustable pushrods and a dyno tune installed in my '03 Deuce last fall for $900. I guess if you add 4 hours of labor at $85/hr to install the head gasket you would be looking around $1,200 USD from my installer. Hot Rod Custom Cycles in High Ridge, MO. Great guys, great work.

sounds about right.
it is a lot cheaper to leave the stock head gasket in place.
changing the head gasket now becomes the same labor amount,as a top end rebuild or just like a big bore. On a 110 I wouldn't take the chance of just slappping a. 030 head gasket on,without pulling the cyl's and replacing base o rings. So now it is just the same amount of labor as a top end.
just labor on cam install and tune 600-900.00 depending on rate
leave the stock gasket in and bolt in a cycle rama 575 or fueling 574 :2vrolijk_21:

After talking to a mechanic friend of mine, I too am thinking the .030 head gaskets might not be worth doing based on how much work it would be to have put in.

Anyone know what you would give up not doing that part of the Stage II?

not enough that you will feel it.
if your venting your breather back into your intake I dont recommend .030 head gasket on a SE110 head motor anyway.
too much carbon build up with some very large valves.
if you were going to do head work, then it would be cost effective. or if you were bored and doing the work yourself.
throw a c/r 575 or fueling 574 in it and tune it. JMO

Just got a quote from a HD dealer and was quoted as $919 complete with pushrod kit, gaskets etc.  Interesting that they recommended a HD 255 cam for my 110" engine  :o  Cam price was $299, labor $437.  About to tackle it myself, and use a different cam :)

That is interesting, considering your 110 came OEM stock with 255 cams.   :(

(I can see the dealer now...Let's get the book out....here's the 110 motor....and here it says 255 cams....yep, that must be what he needs.  I'll recommend them to him.)

Yep, thought the labor would have been much less :) for "wall-time".  Going the Fullsac route w Andrews 54H cams.  Already have Klock Werks muffs.  Considered going through top and installing 0.030 gasket but in a rare instance of rationality chopped the pushrods instead.  The S&S video on cam replacement I found here is a terrific help, as is the support and information.  Great community!

Cheers - back to work, good thing I'm not paying by the hour for my time :)

Weather has dropped by 30 degrees as soon as the bike hit the lift, think it is a trap, and expect it to return to the 100's if/when I get the SEUC back on the ground.
