Back firing engine
« on: July 01, 2011, 12:12:53 PM »

My 2010 CVO UC has 50,000 miles on it, a stock engine, except for cams. Going back in my memory at least 25k to 35k miles ago (long before I put the cams in), about 1 in 10 starts, the engine violently backfires on startup, almost like a small explosion. Last week I took the outer primary off and took the SE compensator apart and the teeth on the compensator assembly that goes on the main shaft were worn out of spec with some play back & forth. So I'm thinking the backfiring caused the compensator to wear and fail, or the compensator failure caused the backfiring.

I'm replacing the compensator assembly today, so I'll find out if it still backfires, but my hunch is it will. If the backfiring continues it will destroy the compensator again so I need to address this now. Has anyone experienced this issue and if so, what could cause violent backfiring?

Odds are it was the compensator causing the backfiring...and replacing the compensator will eliminate it.

That was happening to me, and the compensator was responsible.

Starter stalls due to compensator slop and fires before top dead center and reverses engine so exhaust comes out the throttle body.

Installation of the SE compensator solves a lot of issues with the 110 engine.
But note, that installation has to be per directions.
A big wrench, a ball peen and a 3/4 impact should not be the tools of choice for installation.

I've installed 6-8 SE compensators for friends & customers, so installation will be correct. That's why I took it apart. It's still under the 2 year warranty but I trust my wrenching more than the local dealer's.

Interesting, my 09SEUC does that sometimes on the first start after sitting overnight. Time to install SE compensator.

I completed the repair and had about 15 starts today. No problems at all so far, plus it feels & sounds much better off the line. I'll report back if it back fires again, but if you don't hear from me within a few days, assume the problem was the worn out compensator.

Have seen many issues with this. When you say "backfire" I assume the symptoms are more like, when starting, the starter sounds like it's going to blow out the throttle body, then yes, compensator. Good way to check is start the bike and then while listening to the primary, turn it off. If you hear a loud rattle as it stops, again, yes it's the compensator.
Only 1 way to go, SE compensator. You'll feel the difference immediately.
