will the tear drop aircleaner cover work on 2004 pumpkin and if not what is involed with makin it work

Yes, it will work and I have one on mine, currently.  It does require a different adapter than the stock cover, however.  Your dealer should be able to fix you up.

I'm assuming from your question you still have a stock bike with stock air cleaner and black plastic backing plate.  If you want to go to the tear drop and an open element (no backing plate), you will need the stage one download, even if you leave the mufflers stock.
