Adding a powerlet connector
« on: September 14, 2011, 08:54:48 PM »

Hi , I am adding a powerlet connector so my wife can have the Garmin plugged in while we ride. I have a service manuel and of course the owner's manual. Since I  didn't see it it either book I was wondering if you have to remove the main fuse before disconnecting the battery terminals? Thanks in advance. CAHDBIKER

Shouldn't have to remove the fuse. Just disconnect the battery.

It's good practice to do so...

So you don't set off the alarm:  With your FOB present - turn your ignition "on"  - turn the run switch to "run" - pull the main maxi-fuse.

Sandunbar, thanks for the advice. It is hooked up and working fine. No problems getting to the battery etc. However, I wish the companies that make the cables would mount the fuse holder farther away from the battery and closer to where you plug into your device.Reason being is that just incase a fuse pops for some reason you have to remove the seat to get at it. It is the same on all my bikes that have "battery tender" type connectors. I mounted the cigarette lighter type plug next to where the passenger would plug in their head set. I used a few zip ties and it is quite sturdy. Thanks again.

cad, fuses are always put as close to power source as possible.  Fuses are to protect the wire from to much load, wires WILL burn if too hot.  Mounting the fuse as close as possible to power source keeps the unprotected part of the wire as short as possible.  Think about where fuse box is in your house for an example.  I'm not an expert, but I did pick up basic ideas from this website, ( bcae1.com )    Very interesting reading.
