Lost a cyl 2011 rg
« on: October 03, 2011, 04:23:29 PM »

I was riding yesterday & rolled on it pretty hard thru 2nd shifted to third & lost the rear cyl. It acted as if the bike was in parade mode w/o me activating it. I stopped shut the bike off & re-cycled the ign switch until I got the engine light to function & all was well. I rode it another 150 miles w/o any issues but I was scared to death I'd scissored the crank.

I'm having a similar problem. I'm at highway speed in 6th and it will occasionally drop a cyl and lose power. if I keep the throttle on it will continue to run like crap if I let off the throttle for about 15 seconds it will pickup the cyl and may not do it again for a month or it may do it 15 minutes later. 2011 cvo SG with Fullsac header, TTS and VH HO's.

I didn't like it when it kicked in for the first time myself... regardless if it was actually doing what it was supposed to, as I was sitting in a long line while they were doing random id checks at the gate during rush hour...

I quickly read up on how to dissable that particular feature and haven't had any issue whatsoever.

I figure, if I know I'm going to be sitting idle for awhile, or riding in a parade... just shut down before it gets hot, or straggle a little bit so as you make up space, you get a little air flowing over it.

Don't forget to open you lower's vents if you have them  8)

If I read the first two posts correctly, they aren't talking about the EITMS kicking in while stopped at idle, they're talking about one cylinder not firing while riding.  Two different things; one is normal, the other is definitely not.  Sounds like it's time for some diagnostics and wiggle testing of electrical connections perhaps.

I hear ya.  But I doubt this is 110 specific.  Most likely an electrical gremlin that could haunt any of the new bikes - 96, 103 or 110.

I do not use the idle shut down feature either. I shut mine off if I fear to much heat at idle. Electrical for sure and lean on the dealer it get it resolved.

I never imagined the possibility of the rear cylinder shutting down while actually riding at speed... Still, I didn't think the rear cylinder shut down was worth, what sounded and felt like, the abuse the engine was going through.  It was awful...  as we get quite a few earthquakes here in Alaska, I thought that was what was taking place... a nice little tremor... turned out it was the heat management system kicking in.  It quickly picked up the cylinder as soon as I touched the throttle, but man was that thing shaking bad.
