Stage 1 air cleaner
« on: August 16, 2012, 04:00:55 PM »

I did a search and am confused by the information I found.

My 06 FLHTCUSE is the oldes Harley I have owned, I rode Hondas for 30 years and I do not have a lot of Harley specific knowledge.  We have or had an 07 Road King, 08 Fat Bob, 105th SE Dyna, 09 Electra Glide, and my 06 CVO.

A lot has happened since the 06 was made and what I do know mostly applies to the 08+ models..

My bike has a set of 4" V&H rounds, there is a lot of popping on decel and an occasional backfire.  I would like to install a stage 1 air cleaner and engine management.

The only Harley air cleaner I like is the ventilator.  What makes the ventilator work on 09+ bikes but not my 06?  Can I make the ventilator work on my 06?

What kind of tuning is available for my bike?

I know most of these questions you guys hashed out years ago and I am late to the game.  I never really liked my 09, this 06 fits me much better and I think that this is a keeper for me.

The Ventilator backing plate is made to fit the '08 and later Touring throttle bodies.  The throttle bodies on the '07 and earlier bikes have a smaller diameter, and more importantly they have a different pattern for the three attaching screws for the air cleaner.  On the attached drawing the backplate on the left is for an '07 and earlier bike, and the one on the right is from the Ventilator for the later models.  Note the orientation of the three holes around the large center hole.

I see.

P/N 29773-02C says it will work on my 06 if I use the football cover.  I dislike the football cover.  Im guessing the 06 cover is to deep for the stage 1 backplate and filter, but would work if I fabbed a spacer between the filter and cover.  I do like the oem cover, so that would be ok.

If its more trouble than its worth, I will keep what I have, but I do think that the bike would benefit from better tuning.

Lots of possibilities here! Since the previous owner switched out the pipes, he may have also added the Harley Davidson Screamin' Eagle Stage 1 air cleaner kit which will sit under the original air cleaner cover in spite of what Harley says. If not, there are many really effective after market (Arlen Ness Big Sucker comes to mind) air cleaner kits. The popping can be any number of things, but I would start by looking at your exhaust gaskets. The tune, or lack thereof, may also have something to do with it.

Hope this helps,

Easy to tell if the backplate has been changed out by just looking at the filter.  The OEM was a paper filter in a black plastic enclosure, and it's not round.  What you want is the SE Backplate (in chrome of course) to fit your model.  http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448768356&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374309440686&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374309440686&bmUID=1345150828485&bmLocale=en_US

If you go to that page, it will give you the other part numbers needed to install the backplate.  Then you need the K&N filter...you can get them at many sources, or HD sells them  http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448778274&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374309440686&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374309440686&bmUID=1345150979767&bmLocale=en_US

The stock cover WILL fit, despite what the dealer may tell you.  You can use a spacer, or you can get a thick gasket that will stick to the outside of the filter element to take up the slack...you can probably find something that will work at Autozone, but HD makes the gasket...I can't recall the part number though.  Just use plenty of Blue Loctite on the bolts that hold everything on and you'll be good to go.

There were a few options for "tuning" back then...the dealer could download a map to the ECM for a Stage I kit, which consisted of high flow mufflers and the SE Air Cleaner.  Generally speaking, that would get the job done.  For a more precise tune, you have three options, IMO:  The SE Race Tuner; TTS Mastertune; Powercommander III.  There are other options, but those are the best three, IMO.  The Powercommander will work fine on your bike, as it does not have the O2 sensors like the newer model bikes.  But basically, you need to first find a good tuner, then use the product he is most comfortable using.  A good tuner is NOT necessarily available at your local HD dealership...there are exceptions, of course.  If you ask here, someone will know somebody in your area (most likely) that can do a good tune on your bike.  With the decel popping, backfiring, etc, you do need a good tune, provided all the hardware on the bike is fitting well (exhaust has no leakes, intake has no leaks, other related components are in good shape.

If you want to get the most out of that bike, change out the headers too.

The bike only has 6,000 miles on it, and I put 1000 of those on since last Saturday.

I looked at the Big Sucker and it seems like it will fit nicely, however I did not see anyone offering them for the pre 08 bikes.

Does my bike have cats?

The misses bike has true duals and I like the look much better, so maybe I will go that way this winter.

I just went down this same path. Went with the Arlen Ness Big Sucker intake and reused the stock football cover. Picked up a PC-V "retrofit" from Fuel Moto which helped a lot with the decel popping and cooled it down a bit. Last week I put a set of V&H dresser duals on. Loved the look and sound of them on my '04 Road Glide so I went with them on this scoot. Received a new map from Fuel Moto to accomodate the install of the duals. Put a 100 miles on yesterday and the bike runs ridiculously well and strong. It's also noticeably cooler. I need to find a set of slip-ons I'm happy with but that will take some time. There's always something....

Give Fuel Moto a call and see what they can hook you up with. They are great folks to deal with.

your bike does need a tuner....

such as a power commander, screaming eagle race tuner etc.

you should be able to find a setting based upon your currant set up.

Enjoy

Something you might try before tuning, I'm not saying it doesn't need tuning, but if your exhaust collars at the exhaust port on the heads are loose, or if you have bad gaskets there, it can suck in air and pop on decel.

On my '05 FI Wideglide, I used a Ness Big Sucker, and instead of using the football cover, I used a round "retro looking" H-D chrome cover that is approx 7.5" to 8" dia and stands out about 3".  I used the matching round horn cover.

Good luck on your popping/tuning.

also remember that true duals look cool and sound cool - but, in general, with most tuner devices, and most tuners, make less power at low rpm and more power at high rpm

low is below 4000, high is above 4000

ie - they make less power where you really ride and more when showing off in front of the bar

stock head pipes and two into one pipes will give you more power at speeds you actually ride at
