"Who's dumping nails on Highway 58? Dealers report increase in puncture repairs

Someone has been dumping thousands of No. 6 construction nails along Highway 58 in Michigan, and one motorcycle dealer reports repairing tires on 20 bikes due to the stunt.

"We had one customer that had seven nails in one tire," Bald Eagle Harley-Davidson parts manager David Zambon told WLUC TV.

The nails started puncturing tires about a month ago. Authorities believe the nails are dumped on purpose as new nails keep showing up between Melstrand and Grand Marais. At least 60 tire punctures have been reported.

"Most people don't realize how dangerous it is to have a flat on a motorcycle; with the corners that are here on H-58, it's a recipe for disaster," Brad Kolbus of UP Cruising, a website dedicated to motorcycling Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, told the station. The site is offering a $2,000 reward for tips leading to the capture of the culprit, and is taking donations to up the ante.

Anyone with information about the nails is asked to call Michigan State Police Negaunee Post at 906-475-9922, the Alger County Sheriff's Department at 906-387-4444, or Munising Detachment at 906-387-4551.

I was on that road in August.  Awesome road.  Hope that catch the chithead that is doing this real soon - before someone gets injured.

Bummer Kraut.  Regrets for the loss of life.  I ride to work on several large freeways in the SF Bay Area, with lots of contractor traffic. We get ladders, nails, paint and plywood that occasionally fall of of trucks. I fear seeing a ladder appearing cross my lane at 70+mph.  But for someone to deliberately scatter nails is sick.

It's hard not to override the headlights in the dark mornings at 5:30, so I have to be very diligent watching out for potential debris.  vandalism is the rare exception.  Nonetheless I'll hop on in the AM and enjoy the ride to work.

*****Just an update on the nail issue.*****

We have been working with the Michigan State Police trying to come up with some answers on why someone would do this.

With the help of our fellow bikers, the Grand Marais Chamber, the Munising Visitors Bureau, and some local businesses, the reward as of today Oct. 22, 2011 is at $6,500 to catch this dirt bag.

We at U.P. Cruising take safety and fun as #1 priority. When someone takes the safety part out of the equation,... we get mad!!! This effects all of us that ride.

We will continue to move forward on catching the person or persons responsable for such a horrific act.

I sure hope they catch the dirtbag with the nails.  That is a very nice ride, I spent a couple days up there this past July, I just love the area.
