Helmets
« on: November 12, 2011, 03:14:49 PM »

Do helmets have expirey dates and has anyone been brought to task over this with the law.

Can't seem to find a date in mine. I was told 5 years of date of manufature.

Any comments

If you drop the Helmet on a hard surface then you replace immediately. For normal wear, helmet manufacturers and the Snell Foundation suggest replacement after about 5 years.

Impact protection comes from the outer shell, the styrene inner shell, and the comfort lining. The styrene inner liner crushes as it absorbs energy. The comfort liner compresses until it bottoms out against the styrene. Glues, resins and other materials used in helmet production can affect liner materials, and general liner deterioration and helmet degradation can result from hair oils, body fluids, cosmetics, and normal "wear and tear."

From past experience there will probably be a noticeable improvement in the protective characteristic of helmets over a five year period due to advances in materials, design and the standards. Therefore, regardless of wear, you will probably want to replace your helmet every five years.

Ask her what the expiration date is on her shoes--------------She will get the picture then. You will get an azz eating , but she will understand that you want a new helmet.

Some helmets have it printed on the inside of one of the straps.
Some have it listed on the inside of the removalable liner. I know
my Arai and Shoei have them on the strap, and my HJC is under
the liner. I know I have a lot of helmets, but I switch off a lot.

I replace mine at the send of the second season of riding. Over kill I know, but it's just my way. I end up buying 2 at a time, different styles (half vrs 3/4, sometimes full).  Problem is I have trouble getting rid of my old ones..... I have 14 in the garage now, I use to toss the oldest when I got to a dozen...

Going from none to a full face, I fully exercised the staff at our local Cycle Gear store.  They have a 7 day return policy I used 3 times...
1st a nice Shoei, I sized it wrong. 2nd one an Arai RX-Q, nice but had a rattle and gave me a sore spot on my forehead.. They ordered me the new Arai Signet, fits nice a little longer front to back...Just measure alot around your noggin, over the top and from front to back.

I highly recommend the Arai products, comfy, vented good and less foggy than others I tried. I did like the schubreath(sic) too but shaped for meatball heads not us reverse Stewie Griffin heads....

The RX-Q (slight oval) or the Signet Q (long oval for me....61 cm circumference, 36 cm front to back, 25 cm side to side)...measure several times..
