NEW GADGET
« on: November 22, 2011, 01:44:31 PM »

Just bought this oil catcher that Harley came out with, that fits under the oil filter so you don't have a mess when you undo the oil filter, it lets the oil drain into your oil pan and not all over the bike or floor. Part # 63794-10 cost 19.95

eGlide Goodies has had them for several years.  I think others have had them for a few years, too.

The MoCo always follows suit behind the aftermarket manufacturers.  For instance, the vented leg fairings.

I found out after the fact that like the HD primary funnel you can get this item at your local auto parts store for 1/2 the price (Damn IT MAN!!).

I am looking at that slim oil drain container as well.

Dealer oil changes are getting more and more cost prohibitive these days.

Still make a mess with the funnel.  Still make a mess with anything you try sometimes.  Best luck I ever had was a 2 liter pop bottle opened on the big end.  But even that would slip sometimes; and still make a mess.  There just is not a really effective solution that's not going to slip sometimes (and still make  a mess).

Most recent home-brewed solution has been another attempt at front draining before loosening the filter.  Took an old breater bolt and ground the end down to a point so it'd drive in to the filter casing then grab with the threads and tighten up.  Hose on the other end of the bolt and let it drain out that way before unscrewing the filter.

Oh yeah, first time I tried that contraption I still made a mess.  Realized it's use has to be a process application.  Start out using it in the bottom and you'll, yes, still make a mess before the bolt gets tightent up enough to seal or before you can get the hose on it.  So unscrew the filter a half turn (and hope you, yes, don't make a mess) to get the bolts insertion point on the high side.  Insert it and screw it in, put the hose on, then retighten the stupid filter to get the drain point back down at the bottom.

One time even pulled the plugs and spun the engine a few times.  Buddy doing the oil change wanted to "get all the old dirty oil out."  Ding dong....   But for the last six months or so this has worked; some.  Except for the times I just didn't screw with.  And then still made a mess.  And spent less time cleaning it up then I would have screwing with the contraption to begin with.

Oil changes are a pain in the ass.

...I bought one and tried it and as others stated...still makes a mess.  So I have resorted back to my homemade catch funnel...I think I remember seeing "Ronco" stamped on it somewhere.  However, my friend has one along with the primary fill and he loves them...guess I should have read the instructions...

I have one, still makes a mess.
Best thing I found so far is a shampoo bottle cut in half. Still makes a mess but not as much.
I always start the oil change with un-bolting the cooler and sliding it off to the side.

I slide a Wal-Mart bag ( with no holes in it ) under the filter ( as if I am putting the filter in the bag)  then loosen the filter and let it fall right into the bag along with the old oil  :huepfenjump3:  Sometimes this doesn't make a mess  :nixweiss:

My gadget usually says "Modelo" or "Cheerios" on it.  A piece of cardboard folded into a shallow vee and trimmed to fit as best it will.

Still makes a mess.

I do pretty good using the oil filter box, just open it up, unfold, form a V to route oil into pan... Very minimal mess  :2vrolijk_21: Also tried Twolanes bolt contraption and it works 100%,   You have to make sure you do each variable step. I use a socket on the breather bolt with short extension to drive in bolt, also make sure to use an o-ring on the bolt...   If you're in hurry though, this technique is not good as It takes about 1/2 hour for oil to drain from filter...
