Front end springs
« on: December 09, 2011, 03:11:53 PM »

OK,
It's time to get the cherry bomb back to some level of ridability.  It's going up on the lift this weekend and getting a proper going through.  I need new sneakers front and back, new speakers (1 blown Hog Tunes.....thinking about going Polk). While the front end is apart, I'm thinking new front end springs.  I looked at the Traxion Dynamics set up and damn near had a heart attack at the price. I see many have gone to PS, the question is on a 2005 SEEG, what part number is the right one, and are they worth the time and effort to install?  The bike is lowered from the factory so I don't want to get the wrong stuff.  Also, what are your thoughts on doing the rear shocks as well??  I love twisties but do they make that big of a difference? Any thoughts on any of the above is appreciated. Speakers too.

Thanks

Hey Baegs - I'm with you on this.  Those carterage inserts are very expensive and replacing the rear shock seems like overkill, if a heavy duty spring can be installed.  In the past, on other bikes I've replaced stock springs with Progressives, front and rear.  Imroved handling all around, especially in parking lots and in slow speed manuvers.

I'm planning on doing the same to this bike and would like to hear some feedback on the options.  Preferably, the lower cost but effecive solutions.

Thanks for bringing this up...

not sure if they will fit or not, but I have my stock fork springs from a 2011 SERGU for sale.  $25 plus shipping, can't beat the price!

Beags...For the Progressive Monotubes, you'll want the ones that are 1" lower, if you want to maintain the stock SEEG height.  If you want to raise both ends up to "normal" height, you'll want the regular version.  You'd gain some ground clearance in the twisties by raising things up to the normal 13" shock height, and now would be the time to do it.  If you'r still running stock shocks, I would DEFINITELY replace them as well.

In my opininon, the Traxxion AK-20 and Bitubo (rear shocks) combination is the absolute best, but it's pricey, and I would not recommend installing the Traxxion AK-20 cartridges at home...you'd have to ship the forks to Traxxion, or to Jim at Metal Dragon.

The Progressive Monotubes would be the next best thing, IMO, and a VAST improvement over the stock crap.  Rear shocks?  Progressive 940's are getting some good comments; Works offers a good one too, from all accounts.  Jim could probably give some good advice on the rear shocks.  When completed, you'll be amazed and wonder why you didn't do it long ago.

Beags,
Just did this upgrade on my :pumpkin: (along with some other stuff) and can say it's a great improvement over stock (and a lot cheaper than Traxxion). If you want to maintain the stock (lowered) height of your :cherry: then you will want to get the "Lowered" Progressive Monotubes. I also did the Progressive Ultra Touring 940 Shocks in the rear at the same time. Along with those I also installed the Tru-Trak (from the group buy you did eon's ago :2vrolijk_21:), new motor mounts, new swing arm bearings, neck bearings and races checked, greased, along with fall away checked at the same time. With all this done bike rides better then it did when it was new.... would highly recommend the Progressive stuff. :bigok:

Do you replace the springs in addition to the Progressive mono tubes?  I'm 320 lbs. and wonder about the front springs.

Did you look at the link I posted in my previous post of the Monotubes? It will show a picture of the parts and might answer your question. :nixweiss:

You need to look at an alternative to stock, and I'd say that to anyone...the stock stuff just sucks so badly, but you just don't know it 'till you've done something different.

The entire guts of the forks is removed and replaced, along with the Fork Oil.

I assume hotrod50's question is in regard to the necessity to use a higher capacity spring than what comes with the monotube kit.  I would suggest that the question could better be answered by the tech folks at Progressive.  They may say the spring capacity is still OK but he will need to add a little preload to keep the ride height where it needs to be, or they may have an alternative spring rate.  Best to go to the horse's mouth.

All,
Thanks for the input.  The bike didn't go "up" this weekend, BB made a good point as to getting the parts together BEFORE I start taking stuff apart.  Right now my furnace is on the fritz (yes, it's freakin' cold here in Dago these days), so my drill press is moved out from in front of the furnace (I got an industrial gear driven drill press in the garage that weighs about 600lbs) so since it's moved out.......it's staying where it is until the heat is fixed. I don't know if I'll do the rear shocks, as I like the adjustability of the air shocks......Stay tuned for the evaluation when it's done!!!
