More fun with SESG2/SESG3 wiring - Speaker Switch can't be added
« on: November 23, 2011, 10:49:25 PM »

Ok ... so I am going through my audio redux ... thought I would add a speaker switch to prevent "Cindy" (my name for NIM girl) from constantly going through the main speakers for "recalculating ... recalculating ... recalculating ..."

WoooHooo!!
HD screws us '11 and '12 SESG owners again!

The speaker switch can't function properly on SESG2/SESG3 models. All fairing cap switches connect via the 105 connector junction. It is designated as "105B" on the fairing cap, and "105A" on the main harness (bike side). It is a 12-position Amp Multilock connector. On ALL other touring bikes, the "105A" connection is fully pinned. On the SESG2/3 there are three pins (wires) missing. The three wires missing are crucial for the proper function of the "Speaker" toggle switch on the fairing cap. The "Speaker" toggle switch is needed to transfer audio between headset and main speakers.

What a complete BIATCH to install the 3 leads into 105A - it's a wrapped harness which means you have to un-wrap the stock electrical tape, then lay the new leads, the re-wrap. You also have to continue two wires into J27 (23-pin) of the H/K head unit. It gets better - the Orange/Blue wire must be tapped from pin 12 of J27 (23-pin bundle), so that bundle must be freed as well. What a fawking crock of bullsh$t.

For those interested ... here is what needs to be added:

105A connector:        Color:            27B (radio, 23 pin):        Signal:
Pin 9                        Orange/Blue    Pin 12                         Accessory Enable (tapped)
Pin 10                       Violet/Orange  Pin 21                         Headset A
Pin 11                       Brown/Orange Pin 13                         Headset B

For DOC.COFFIN -

I saw your post that your dealer installed your CB unit ... curious on if your "Speaker" switch functions properly. Please let me know!!!
I am fast becoming more of an expert on the wiring of the SESG2/3 than I EVER wanted to be. Crazy what HD has done with these models.

Hope everyone has a GREAT holiday ... I'll spend mine doing a bit more wiring on the bike :)!!

Rich, thanks for posting the information.  What an unfortunate surprise to discover the simple installation of a speaker switch requires adding wires that are found on every other fairing equipped Touring model EXCEPT the CVO SG's for 2011 and 2012.

Have to wonder what they were thinking at the MOCO to decide to use a one-off interconnect/fairing harness for the SESG2/3's rather than simply use the same one used on other models.

Enjoy your Holiday!!!

Rich - thanks for all of your continuing research into the nothing-less-than-insane wiring harness of the CVO SGs. I still don't understand why the MoCo did this in the first place! They could have easily simply used an Ultra harness and been done with it. They probably saved a $5 per bike NOT putting in all of the wires we are needing, and screwed us owners... the bean counters are clearly in charge on these EXPEN$IVE bikes!

I just installed the Road Tech Zumo last weekend, and had to deal with the CAN+/- wires, and the R/O radio memory and B/G ground wires using legalley's very good instructions. I just tapped into all four wire and wired them directly into the NIM harness 6A and 6B connector legs, instead of adding a 6B connector. I used that little connector kit for the CAN+/- wires, too... to pick them up from pins 13 and 14 in the 28B connector. The 6A and 6B connectors on the NIM wiring harness each now have all four of these wire connections, so I can hopefully just plug and play into those with any future module additions on this bike. I don't really foresee adding anything else, though. There are sure a LOT of wire bundles inside of my fairing now. I had to find a good place to mount the gigantic GXM 40 antenna, which is about the size of a hockey puck... finally velcroed it beside the NIM on top of other things in there, because it wouldn't fit on top of the NIM mount... the outer fairing wouldn't clear it there. I was concerned there would be too much interference with it on top of the radio because of the big wire bundle that passes over that area.

The speaker switch would be nice, to shut up Garmina on demand... but what another P.I.T.A. you've discovered! If I end up doing this, I will probably just run the new wires on the outside of the existing bundle and tape up the whole thing... or maybe run them separately in some of that split-wrap plastic tubing, of which I have plenty lying around. Unwrapping these bundles is difficult... it looks like they've wrapped them in some sort of really tough plastic mesh that I don't want to cut through.

I'm going through a stereo upgrade currently. After replacing the head unit and amp I am connecting everything up and discover the speakers are 1 ohm. I've never heard of a 1 ohm speaker. Now I'm in the process of replacing the speakers. I'd like to know who designs this stuff.
