Rear wheel bearings
« on: December 19, 2011, 01:29:15 AM »

I have an 08 RK with 38,000 miles on it. Found the rear wheel bearings were bad when replacing the tire. Has anybody else have them go out this soon? I surely thought the sealed bearings would have lasted longer.

To say that it has become "common" would be too strong a word (except for the guys who have dealt with it).  It has become more common than it used to be though.  Hear of it far more with the newer bikes with the 25mm bearings than with the older bikes with the 1" bearings.

Not suggesting the slight change in size has anything to do with it.  Mother Harley probably just sourcing cheaper bearings.

As it turns out it is the bearing on the right side where the ABS sensor is.That bearing is wider. Also the rubber dampers are showing wear. All atwha/

Technical hit the wrong key above. I think this is still low mileage for the dampers and bearings to go.

a little known fact, if your real careful you can remove the seal and add grease if your so inclined.

My sense is that H-D experienced a vendor issue from around mid 2007 through mid to late 2008. The 2008 machines appear to experience an inordinate number of failures, with the model years on either side showing somewhat elevated occurrences of wheel bearing failure. jmho

Both front bearings bad (very noisy) at 11,100 miles. 2009 SE Ultra
Changed rears (ABS side was suspect) also. Covered under ESP warranty
Only 11000 miles! What kind of junk are they using?? Likely from CHINA.

Received replacement bearings for the front since my rear ABS sensor side failed at 38,000 miles thought the front should be replaced too. The sensor bearing was made in Canada. I should feel better huh my brothers to the North.
