small scratches on saddle bag
« on: January 26, 2012, 10:21:13 PM »

Bought a 2012 Ultra about 2 weeks ago. Weather has been sort of crappy since purchase so I only have 300 miles on it. I washed it for the first time today and noticed a small but obvious scratch, on the bottom of one of the saddle bags. Should I say something to the dealer or just live with it. If it was not a brand new bike, I wouldn't even worry about it; but since it is new it sort of bothers me. I don't know if they would replace it or try and touch it up..

With most dealers if you did not point it out on delivery it is yours to live with.
Doesn't hurt to try though.

What kind of scratch? In the paint or just the clear coat? If just the clear coat there is an excellent chance it can be buffed out.
If it in the paint there is a good chance you could make it look worse trying to touch it up.

I had a blemish in the paint of my 07 Street Glide and didn't notice it until the sun shined on it in a particular way. My servicing dealer was not the same one i bought it at and they took about 15 min and took care of it. If it doesn't cost them anything they would probably take care of it. Bought my CVO from them because of the service they gave me. HD of Frederick, great people.

It is several small scratches that went through the black paint and it looks white under the scratch.
I tried to fix part of it with a black magic marker, but you can still see it.

Some things make you say Hmmmm.

I had a friend use a Black Marker on his around the pin strip as another friend had the same paint and he wanted to be different.

Since you see white in the scratch on black paint, that is painted on a black ABS bag you might get lucky.
May only need a body shop to lightly wet sand and buff to clean it up.
I bought a used scratched fender off evil bay with the same type if scratch. Cost me $20 at my local body shop.

Blemish in the paint and a scratch are two different issues. I had a "blemished" tourpak lid warrantied at 6 months.

What have you got to lose by bringing it to the attention of the dealer?  Worse case senario, they say "no."  Sounds like something a good painter cound fix with minimal cost.  You'll never no if the dealer will fix it unless you ask.

GO TO THE AUTOPARTS STORE AND BUY YOURSELF A "CLAYBAR"  A claybar will take out most if not all fine scratches that are not down to the primer, along with any blemishes or discoloration.  All you do is spray it with a mist of water and rub it over the area.  Our detailers use it all the time and they work fantastic.  Not sure what the majical formula is :nixweiss:

Usually, scratches belong to the customer if they aren't found during the delivery process, but that isn't a hard and fast rule.  Show it to the dealership folks and see what they have to say. Try to do it on a day when they seem to be pleased with themselves and life in general, not right after some belligerent guy just got finished cussing them out.

I guess this is as good a time as any to remind prospective new bike buyers that it is in their best interest to not rush the delivery process and to insist on a THOROUGH inspection of the bike both in the building and out in natural daylight.  Any discrepancies should be noted and signed on the delivery documents by both the dealership and the customer, and each party should retain a copy.  This takes all the who shot John out of the transaction.  And btw, while scratches and other damage need to be caught at delivery, manufacturing defects do not.  Never let a dealer BS you on a real defect, like blisters or dirt or marks in the paint, those are covered under the factory warranty for two years.

When I pulled my outer fairing off my 10 FLHXSE to do my bars this winter, the chrome trim pulled a good piece of the paint off with it.  Granted, it would have been 99% covered by the chrome strip, but I snapped a few pictures and called my dealer.

They called the Moco, and eventually the Moco told the dealer to handle it locally.  Brought it in, and a few weeks later, the dealer called that it was done.  Looked brand new.

Best part, I was outside the warranty period, and the dealer took care of it at no cost.  Like mentioned before, nothing ventured, nothing gained.  I would talk to them about it, and maybe they'll fix it.  Never know.
