CVO Street Glide vs CVO Ultra
« on: January 11, 2012, 11:17:44 PM »

Been wanting a CVO Ultra for some time and then I seen a 2012 CVO Street Glide with color matched tour pak and now I am treveling down the road of indecision.  I currently have a 03 ultra and take high mileage trips occasionally.  Would I be giving up a lot of comfort on the long trips?? Never riden a Street Glide and just curious.

Thanks

Ride wise the only difference is the rear shocks. They are 1" shorter and not air shocks like the ultra. The other things you may miss is some of the electronics, CB, Intercom, XM, etc, and comfort items like the Heated grips and seat. These can be added to the Streetglide. The plus is you can't beat the looks of the street glide rear end :2vrolijk_21:

Hey The Ultra will out ride and on a trip the ultra is the bike to ride , Street Glide is ok for around town short trips .  The ultra will outride it and you will have more storage to take your wifes bath room with you. I have both bikes and when you want to take a trip the ultra is the best hands down.

I have a 2011 CVO Street Glide. LOVE IT!

It is significantly sportier than the Ultra. Low profile front tires, Thinner Seat and stiffer rear shocks. BUT........The great thing is that you can add a "removable" tour pack, the rear end is very good looking, your feet will sit flat on the ground and you get a much better sound system. As mentioned you can add all the other bells and whistles to the Street Glide. But do you really need a CB Radio?

As far as how long of a trip can you take on an "around town short trip" bike. Well, my wife and I ran from St. Louis to Colorado Springs to Denver to Rocky Mountain National Park, to Jackson WY to Yellowstone to Sturgis and back home in early September (Approx 4000 miles) with absolutely no issues with comfort or storage. Even my wife's "bathroom" fit with no problem.

You can see by the attached photo that we don't have a tour pack, just soft carry ons. One other thing to mention.......My wife is only 5'-1" tall and about 115 lbs. She can tell you that the Ultra has waaaaaayyyyy less passenger room than the Street Glide. Quite frankly, I have have to constantly check that she's back there on the Street Glide but when I rode the Ultra she was basically sitting up on my back. Definitely something to think about.

Ultra's are great for sitting on the highway for miles and miles but the Street Glide is much more all around touring bike. As you know you don't ride 4000 every weekend.

Love my Street Glide!!

Good luck on your decision.

I've owned several Ultra Classics and now have the Street Glide.  Ultra Classic is nice, cushioned ride.  Street Glide w/king tour pack actually has a bit more storage space inside dry, locked bags.  Ultra Classic has the feature that Jim mentioned above but I've put most of that on my SG and don't use a CB (never did).  The Ultra Classic is a bit heavier and at the end of a long hard day of 800-1,000 miles that does make a difference.

You metion that it already has the tour pack, it's very easy to add the XM radio.....with the streatched saddle bags, the rear fender LED tailights, etc. if both were the same price, I'd go with the Street Glide again.  The fact that the Street Glide is much less than the Ultra Classic, for me.....it's not even a question. :nixweiss:

Basically, what the others have said.  I went from 05 Ultra to 11 SESG.  Added the tourpack (detachable).  Styling, wheels and paint were the kicker.  Don't use CB anymore, and I can get by without heated seat/grips.  My phone will work good enough for GPS and don't listen to XM now that I have the integrated Ipod.

Almost 100,000 miles on the 2 Ultras I have owned, now have a 2005 SEEG ( where the Street Glide came from ) and only miss the heated grips and rear speakers. Those can be added, never have used the CB, intercom, and never liked what XM offered. Get what looks good to you and ride the tires off it!

+1 on what everyone said on the Street Glide. I like the sportier look better and it definitely can go long distance too. We went to Sturgis this year and never had an issue with storage or comfort. I definitely did not need the heated grips!

I've owned a 09 SERG, three 05 SEEG's and now have 11 SE Ultra I bought the Ultra because Soozie wanted to ride on back some and on long trips I take our Bushtec. There all great bikes go with your gut feeling!

Then why does my 2010 Screamin Eagle Street Glide have 40k miles on it? :huepfenlol2:  Of which......more than a couple of those were 800-1,000 mile days. ???  And it's used for pleasure only......I drive a truck to work. :(

How about a SESGU? That's pretty much what I've made my FLHXSE3 into - with a detachable King Tour Pak, matching passenger boards, aux lights up front, Corbin seat, and a RoadTech 665 with XM on the fairing. It's got everything I need and want, is lower and easier to handle than an Ultra, has the stretched bags, the 400 watt sound system, the SG rear fender, the cool lighted CVO console, and the awesome 2012 SESG Hot Citrus paint job. I would never use the CB nor Intercom anyway, since my wife rides her own Tri Glide Ultra. And since we have Gerbing Xtreme Element heated gear, no need for heated grips, either.

I've ridden on about 6 all-day trips on it, including down to Ocala, FL and back once... and it's every bit as comfortable as an Ultra to me. I can sit all day on my Corbin SoloTour seat.

In 5 months I put 24 270 KM on my FLHXSE2. 6 500 KM in 12 days on a ride from Toronto to New Orleans. Strictly pleasure as I drive to work in my car. While most of my buddies wanted to put over a take a break I was willing to keep going. :bananarock:

Saying that though I have never been on an Ultra and don't think I want too. :huepfenjump3:

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.  I thought I seen a post on this sight or another one where someone put a CVO Street Glide rear fender on an CVO Ultra and it looked great. Has anyone seen this done and if so please attach a link or suggest where I can do more research.

Thanks
